Captain America: Civil War trailer

My comment from the first trailer:

For some reason, Steve thinks there’s a kill order out on Bucky, which he’s not willing to let happen. Especially if there are some new atrocities being laid at Bucky’s feet that Steve knows he didn’t do.

Or that Steve feels Bucky shouldn’t be held responsible for because he was brainwashed/mind-controlled, even if he was the physical tool that did them.

OK, thanks so much to both of you - that clears up a lot. Not a big comic book reader, and I never liked MacFarlane’s style, but the Gizmodo article makes it look a bit less-sucky.

I’ll say, I think that the actor who plays Spidey should replaced by a different actor who plays Spidey in the next Avengers-type movie, with a new reboot origin story. Hell, replace the actor halfway through “Civil War”.

I’m still amazed this didn’t happen with the BEWITCHED movie.

Artists have depicted Spidey’s eyes like that for a long time – going back to Ditko in the 60s.

I think they’re supposed to be mechanical, like camera lenses, which would totally be something Peter Parker would make.

The costume looks fine to me, but he sounds like he’s 14. Is that intentional?

If it’s Peter Parker, he’s traditionally quite young. Not fourteen, but in his original incarnation still in high school.

They have said they were going young with the reboot. This proves it.

It’ll be interesting to see if that technology for animating the eyeholes in masks is adapted for other costumed adventurers. Many characters with masks, even those without exaggerated eyes like Spidey, are drawn with their eyes represented as blank white spaces (unless it’s an extreme closeup), but there’s a lot more characterization possible on the page because the white spaces, and the area around the eyebrows, can be drawn to represent surprise, anger, dubiousness, etc. (Batman, Green Arrow, Wolverine and Iron Fist all come to mind, but there are tons of others.)

It gives a whole new realm of expressiveness to characters. The costumes in the first two series of Spider-Man movies, including the ones for Spider-Man and Green Goblin, could have been much more effective if they’d been capable of expressing emotion like they are in the printed comics. Instead, the screenwriters had to find ways to have their masks at least partially destroyed so that the actors could emote.

To my knowledge yes. What I have read is that each new Marvel Universe hero intro’d, they are grafting a superhero movie onto a classic genre. Ant-Man = crime caper; Cap = 70’s conspiracy movies; DDevil = gritty 70’s street movies, etc.

I believe now that Spider-Man is under the MCU umbrella, they are grafting it onto a John Hughes, teen movie type of genre.

Baron Zemo: Looks around library at various Avengers slouching behind tables, extends index finger and pinkie and points at Capt America
“You mess with the bull, you get the horns.”

True enough- Dikto also changed the size of the lenses to give Peter expressiveness, if not in the completely cartoonish way it was later used. Even Romita sr. gave him the occasional squinty eyes.

So it’s pretty canon.

I believe that would be Baron Neo Maxie Zemo Dweebie.

If you listen closely, when his eyes narrow you can hear a slight mechanical whirr. So either he designed it that way or this is a new costume courtesy of Tony.

This is what I am hopping for too.
And for Spider-Mans eyes, Peter is a photographer, and since he’s all smart I believe he could easily jerry-rig some lenses into his costume.

This movie is going to kick all kinds of ass!

Quick question for those familiar with the comics. It looks like Black Panther’s suit is bulletproof, probably due to the vibranium his country is famous for. In the comics, his costume just looks like skintight spandex, but in the movies, it looks more like the kind of molded rubber that recent Batman movies have. But what about his mask? Is it more of a helmet like Iron Man’s that he can’t just remove, or can he pull off his mask like a cloth like Spiderman? There’s a lot of articulation in the mask, but because its all black, I can’t tell if its supposed to be rubber or metal.

Yeah, well Cap can just walk Bucky down to a courthouse and turn him in then, eh? But I would guess Bucky is refusing to come in, making them hunt him, and since Bucky is very dangerous, they are hunting with extreme prejudice. I cant really blame them, honestly.

Is it just me or does the plot of Civil War seem to be lifted from the whole X-Men series?
You have a whole series of characters with super powers and in order to get them to battle each other you divide them into two groups, those who want to be free to use their powers at their discretion(CapnAmerica/Magneto), and those who agree they need to work with regular folk and abide by some regulations (IronMan/Xavier).
Just seems like we’ve seen this plot device before.

I think the similarities are there, but overstated. X-Men has always been about race. The mutants have doubled for racial minorities since X-Men was invented in 1963. The goal of Professor X has been about racial harmony and respecting each other’s differences rather than working with the government. Magneto believes in racial superiority, and his legacy as a holocaust survivor makes him distrust government not because they are the government but because he thinks humanity will not accept a superior race among them.

Whereas Civil War was created about 10 years ago in the post 9/11 era, so its mostly a conflict between security and freedom. The government supporter superheroes have freedom if they work with the government. They are free to oppress, capture, and kill any supers who are not under the government’s umbrella. And Captain America isn’t fighting for racial harmony, he’s not even against the government as he’s portrayed as a loyal soldier. Its only when that government starts rounding people up without trial, then he starts opposing them.
