Years ago, I wanted to build retro AR-15s/M-16s. I mostly got the rifle built, but I couldn’t get the front sight off of the barrel so that I could replace the tapered delta ring with a straight one, and I couldn’t get the roll pin into the rear sight; so I took it to a gunsmith today to get it finished. I have another upper-and lower-receiver with non-captive pins that I want to build into a CAR-15. I have a 1979 Colt SP-1 CAR-15 with the telescoping stock (and a 1979 Colt SP-1 AR-15), so I want a fixed stock for the retro build.
Question 1: Should I go for the early fixed stock with the swivelling sling swivel, or should I go for the A1-style with a fixed swivel?
Question 2: Should I use a chromed bolt carrier assembly, or a black one?
My intention is to replicate a ‘field modification’. I don’t know if the lower receiver would still have the old-style stock, or an A1-style stock. I assume the upper would have a black bolt carrier assembly, even though the upper itself has the non-capitive pins.
