His first problem is that most of his material was dated thirty years ago. The second problem is that he’s quite bad at, well, delivering said jokes. The last problem is that ‘dee dee dee’ is the worst punchline ever.
DEE DEE DEE!!!

DEE DEE DEE!!!
I liked a few Mind of Mencia episodes but lately I just haven’t found them to be all that funny. I thought the “Dee dee dee” song was really weak. I don’t mind if something is offensive but I want it to be funny and Mencia just doesn’t seem to delivery lately.

Then again I think the third season of Chapelle show has been pretty weak in the comedy department and I like Dave Chapelle a lot more then I ever liked Mencia.

I think he’s funny.
Well, except for all the jokes he’s stolen from other comedians. Joe Rogan’s called him out on it before.
I had the dubious “pleasure” of catching his show earlier this week. His monologue was OK – nothing side-splitting – and I snickered a few times.
When the skits came on, though…
I’ve never seen whatever the humor is (and I’m using “humor” loosley) in any kind of racism. He did a gay takeoff of POTC and the entire time I had my face in my hands.
Let’s just hope he goes as quickly as Andrew Dice Clay did.
My problem with Mencia is that he’s been doing the same act since I first heard of him. The one show of his I really liked was the his “Comedy Central Presents…” It had a lot of the same jokes but he delivered them a lot better. This was after 9/11 and he even had some regarding that. All in all, a very funny show.
I’ve watched his series a few times and my biggest problem with it is that he thinks he’s edgy. As if he’s saying things everyone else is afraid to say.
And I wouldn’t put Dave Chappelle and Mencia in the same category. Dave Chappelle is funny. With or without stereotypes. The only thing about Dave’s show that I didn’t like is the way the audience receieved it. Which is probably because a lot of his audience were pre-teens, teens, and/or white. Which meant that when Dave said “nigger” and “white power,” the audience would react like “he said nigger! it was funny! I’m going to say it and be funny too!” Even though the character was the joke, not the things he was saying. Dave Chappelle is funny. It bothers me that he only became as famous as he is because he shouted “I’m Rick James, bitch!”
Mencia, on the other hand, is not funny.
I think the big problem with Mencia is that he stopped going for laughs and is trying for applause. A lot of popular comedians have made that mistake. They gain a following for whatever reason and then play to the crowd instead of trying to be funny. See Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay and George Carlin. When a comedian gets more applause than laughs watch out.
The first time I heard Mencia was on the old Opie and Anthony show (pre-firing). I never heard of the guy although I guess he was starting to make a name for himself on the West Coast. He was on for most of the show and he killed. From that show I thought he was one of the funniest comedians around. He was relaxed and quick, telling stories about his family, going up and some ethic humor. Next I saw him several years later and he had a big following and he started believing the hype. I sure it works out for him financially but I know he can be funny, I’ve seen it. Instead he’s the “Punisher”.
The Joe Rogan feud also played out on the O&A XM radio show. Rogan claims that all the other comedians call him Carlos Manstealya behind his back. I don’t know if he really does steal from other comedians but it did make for some great radio.
I think that this is a case of a guy who used to be funny in small amounts a long time ago, but is no where near funny, creative, or talented enough to have his own show. I used to give him some slack since I am hispanic and there are not a lot of Hispanic comedians on TV. Now I have to say his show is one of the stupidest and unfunny on television.
Carlos Mencia is a hack, and I don’t understand why he has any fans. His show only exists because Dave Chappelle was Comedy Central’s #1 show and they needed something to fill the gap after Chappelle left. He tries way, way too hard to be Dave Chappelle. Apparently he has fans because he “speaks his mind” but in reality he’s an unfunny attention whore. The difference between him and Dave Chappelle is that Dave actually understood that the issue of race is filled with subtlety, whereas Carlos Mencia’s act consists of spouting out as many racial slurs as possible. Lame. I never saw his stand-up act, but I’m willing to believe he was funny at one point. Now, though, he’s just another annoying, over-hyped celebrity.
Mencia is no Chappelle, but he’s funnier than most. Admittedly, this was more true for his stand-up than for his current show.
Joe Rogan, on the other hand, is unfunny and a whiny jealous bitch.
It’s not just Rogan. George Lopez has accused Mencia of stealing his material.
The only think I want to hear from people who work at McDs or BK is “Do you want fries with that?”, and I don’t give a flying fuck what race they are. That’s their job, I’m the customer (on the rare occations I eat fast food) what else is there?
Although his show is not the greatest (I did like some of the earlier episodes, havent seen much of the new stuff)…I really liked his stand up routine “No Strings Attached” and other older ones that I saw on comedy central. He tries to push across his philisophy of how society should be, and I kindof like it. It makes it seem like he has a point he wants to bring across. And at the same time its still very funny.
I will say I think the home depot joke is getting kindof old. I hardly laughed at that joke in the first place.
But in “No Strings Attached”, he goes thru a skit in where he actually becomes friends with a handicapped person. I think thats one of the funniest skits ive ever seen! please don’t tell me thats stolen, haha.
I don’t watch comedy that much, so I’m not familiar with all these other guys that he’s apparently stealing jokes from. If its 30+ years old, at least I’m glad I can hear these jokes in a “new” fashion. I’m not 30 years old yet.
Yep. Also known as Happy Days and Married with Children syndrome. It is at its worst when, after a joke bombs, the comic then eggs the audience for applause and still gets it anyway. Basically saying, “Come on, I was funny once, clap for me because of my reputation!”. Carlos goes even further, getting applause by shaming the audience with peer pressure tactics if they don’t laugh: wait, Carlos says I’m supposed to laugh, or I’m not hip and cool, the people around me must be cool then, I’d better laugh along!
I’m just amazed that George Carlin has been working his past reputation successfully for so many decades. He really was funny once.
Carlos does have his funny moments though, and he is very skilled about reading and working an audience to get a joke to go over and make an audience responsive, probably as good as Letterman in his prime at working a studio audience.
But George isn’t a whiny jealous bitch about it.
You can say a lot about Rogan but that’s not one of them. Egotistical psycho yes, bitch no. I’m surprised he hasn’t ripped off Mencia’s head yet. Maybe all the pot is calming him down.
That “dee dee dee” thing was like the unofficial catch phrase of my office for months, and I had no idea what it was supposed to be. I had never heard of Carlos Mencia until just recently.
Just confirms what I already knew: my coworkers are dumbasses.
Mind of Mencia is good if you use it as metahumor. I’ve watched the show with my one black friend® and when Mencia makes a joke about blacks, I’ll say,“That’s so true!” or somesuch and we will have a hearty laugh.
Maybe you had to be there.
