Carrying concealed weapon - Vermont - Legal?

My ex- wants to move somewhere where she can carry a concealed weapon(one of the reasons she’s my ex). She said something about Vermont. It took me a while to comprehend that, then I thought Vermont?? Isn’t that rather liberal and progressive?? Gay marriages, Independent Senators.

I’m guessing it’s legal in New Hampshire-Live Free or Die, etc. rather than Vermont.

She’s insists it’s Vermont, I bet it’s New Hampshire, if at all. In the midwest we sometimes get those little eastern states mixed up here. Anyone know?

According to this site, which details reciprocity among state guna laws, “Vermont does not issue permits, but allows carrying of concealed firearms if there is no intent to commit a crime.” Sounds pretty free to me. Acording to Vermont state law gun sellers must also keep very detailed instructions on gun sales.

The National Rifle Association has a map linking to summaries of state gun laws. They have the usual lawyerly cautions about things being out of date and federal laws superseding state ones and don’t forget about local ordinances and so forth. If you (or the ex) are actually planning on packing heat someplace, you would be well advised to do some more careful checking. But if you just want to do a little bit of comparative research in order to find a state with gun laws which are philosophically congenial to you, it’s a place to start.

Ah yes, Vermont. pldennison is right. It’s one of those strange little quirks that makes life so very interesting. Vermont is arguably the most liberal state of the union…except when it comes to guns. To the best of my knowledge, at the state level there are virtually no laws other than the one mentioned by pldennison. Here is another cite for you. I believe a few localities may have their own laws, but I vaguely recall a legal decision a few years back that determined that they are overridden by the state constitution (if anyone has more info on this, I would be interested), and in any case they are almost never enforced.

There is a group called Pink Pistols ( http://www.pinkpistols.com/faq.html ), a gay friendly pro-gun rights organization. According to Jay Leno, their motto is “Yes, that is a gun in our pocket, and we are happy to see you”. I don’t know if they have a chapter in VT, but they ought to.

I hope your ex does move here…she sounds pretty cool to me.

http://www.packing.org is one of the better sites for concealed carry info.

Yes, it is Vermont that does not require any permit for either residents or nonresidents, and has few restrictions on where you can carry. Various towns in Vt. do have some restrictions however.

I live in NH,and it is also an extremely gun-friendly state. It is very easyto get a permit here, as long as you don’t have a criminal record or something, and the only state restriction on where you can carry is not in or around courtrooms. You cannot carry in a school or on federal property (post office, etc.) in any state.

It’s funny - eveyone thinks of Texas or Florida, for example, as being so pro-gun, and yet in those states there is a long list of places you can’t carry - churches, bars, sporting events etc. and they require training and a test. They also do not allow open carry, meaning you can get in trouble if your gun becomes visible.

New Hampshire has none of those restrictions.

LIVE FREE OR DIE, BABY!

Thanks guys, I was wrong, she was right. From what I think of when I think of Vermont, I didn’t think of that.
