Palmer will be a highly sought after QB. Does anyone know what Palmer’s contract situation is? If he has at least 1 year left, or 2 or more?
I see him fitting in nicely for the Cardinals, 49ers, Redskins, Vikings, and anyone else who can protect a QB.
If what I read in this thread is true (Vikings interested in Vince Young), Viking fans are going to be begging for Tavaris Jackson. Who is terrible, in case you all don’t know.
Not to be cynical, but this may be a contract power-play, as the NFL is looking at a lockout beginning March 3. If he resigns a big contract with Cincy, he’ll be sitting pretty with a nice big bonus while everyone else has to wait for the season to start.
As a Steeler fan, I would be more than happy to see Carson out of the AFC North. He’s an above average QB who may be an excellent QB in the right organization.
There’s no way Cincy is going to renegotiate his contract to give him more money. His base salary over the next four years is so large that people have been talking about whether the Bengals should cut him – he’s still a valuable player to have (in that he’s probably at least average, and a lot of teams have worse players at the position), but he’s being paid like a superstar, which he isn’t. And he’s 31, so he’ll probably get worse before he gets better.
Really, if the Bengals try to trade him, and Palmer’s contract remains as it is, I think they’d be *very *lucky to get a 2nd Rounder.
I don’t see what the big deal is. Since he lost his knee, he’s been doodoo, somewhere around the Jake Cutler (worse arm, better attitude) and Orton (worse arm, better brain) level. He might have a Kerry Collins year or two left in him, but he’s at least 4 years past his prime.
Given the ages of TO and Chad, Cinci might as well give up and start rebuilding since they’ll never get past Balt/Pitt in the foreseeable future. The current WR corps looks decent, but more importantly, they’re young. Also, since they’re perennial losers, there’s no pressure to win right away, and they’ll always have the Balt/Pitt excuse if they miss the playoffs.
No matter what he decides to do, he’s below average and should be treated as such.
He had a Pro Bowl year in 2006, the year after his knee was shredded. It isn’t really him…the team around him (especially the offensive line) has fallen apart starting in 2007. Their offensive line is still shit for the most part. Palmer isn’t athletic like Vick or big and strong like Ben. He’s a pure pocket passer and as such, needs a better o-line to be relatively successful. He’s an above-average QB.
His contract is definitely bigger than his talent though.
For those of you that are Bengal fans, is the consensus that Palmer is on the downside of his career?
I know he hasn’t seemed the same since his knee injury, and I only get to watch him two or three times a year, but off the top of my head, if someone asked me who I’d want as my QB, Palmer or Flacco, I’d take Palmer, assuming I wouldn’t have to take the Bengals O-line with him.
I was born and raised in Cincinnati. Going on 45 years old. I’ve never heard of Cincinnati referred to as “The 'Nati” or “The Nasty 'Nati.” Just saying.
I think Palmer is the second best QB in the division as well, behind Rothlisberger. Flacco absolutely stinks when the chips are down. Palmer is more than capable of leading comeback wins. In fact, he’s done it quite a bit.
I don’t agree. I think the elbow is fine. He had good velocity and zip on his balls this year. I think Palmer’s QB issues are mental, along with his physical limitations (immobility).
I suspect that it’s similar to “The Chi” for Chicago. No one with any sense would use it except for rappers, newspaper editors struggling for a headline and douchebags.
He sounds a lot like Warner heading into Arizona. I know the Bengals are trying to play hardball, but they should look into negotiating a hefty deal for him. If they can get a couple quality picks and maybe Steve Breaston for him you have to do it. Considering where the Bengals are drafting they can make a move on Gabbert or whoever the second best QB is. The Cards can continue letting Skelton (a similar skill set to Palmer) develop under him and give Fitzy something to get excited about. Win-win for both teams.
What’s the best case scenario for the Bengals if they keep him? That he recovers his 2007 form and strands the Bengals in the middle-late rounds of the draft for the next 3 or 4 seasons? Is he taking them to the promise land? Establishing them ahead of the Steelers and Ravens? Going to last through this upcoming rebuilding process?
I don’t know what is going to happen. The Bengals are going to lose TO, Chad and likely Cedric Benson and now possibly Palmer. That’s a lot of their offense. A few players have voiced their frustration with the offensive playcalling (along with legions of fans), most notably Benson, Palmer and LT Whitworth. Bratkowski has to go, but Mike Brown is stubborn as fuck. Maybe he’s holding out to make changes until a new CBA is reached, but that sticking point isn’t stopping other teams from making changes.
Ultimately, this team is run by the Brown family and it isn’t run well. Too much headstrong reliance on methods that don’t work, too much reluctance to change, too much loyalty to players (Chris Henry) and coaches that need to go, etc.
Its great being a Bengals fan! You never know what you’re going to get!
Sounds to me like you know exactly what you are going to get. Every year.
Is it a done deal that TO is leaving? I thought he had a pretty good year, and he didn’t make much noise (well, any noise that was heard outside of Cincinnati).
If the Bengals are losing all of the players mentioned, no wonder Palmer wants out.
That’s the exact reason why I’d be looking to shift Palmer while he still has value. Why rebuild half-way? I suppose Palmer is young enough to last through a youth movement, try and bring back Benson while incorporating Scott more frequently and drafting a bunch of WRs and lineman but they’d better be damn sure that a regime change would make Palmer happy and that he’s not in permanent decline.
I agree. I’ve been crying for Bernard Scott to get more involved in the offense. He’s one of the better RB’s nobody’s heard about. Its very frustrating. When they do use him, they don’t use him properly. That guy is built for plays that get him into open space…screens, pitchouts, etc. Instead, they run him like he’s Benson…between the tackles.
