Inspired by watching *A Charlie Brown Christmas: *What on earth is Charie Brown’s hair supposed to look like in real life? I know he’s sometimes called “the bald kid,” but are we to understand that he’s actually bald, with a little tuft of hair at the back and one curly hair in the front?
While we’re on the subject, what about Dagwood Bumstead’s hair? What are those, wings?
I’ve never heard Charlie Brown called “the bald kid,” at least canonically. Snoopy often refers to him as “the round-headed kid,” however. Charles Schulz has stated on at least one occasion that Charlie Brown is not bald, but rather has a very bright, strawberry-blonde colored hair that is very close to his skin tone- that’s why he appears to be bald. I have no idea what’s up with Dagwood, though.
I also got the impression CB’s hair was closely-cropped–almost a crew cut. I always thought if you saw that haircut in real life and on an adult, it would look similar to Drew Carrey’s.
I don’t know how popular spiked hair is now, but it was very popular when The Simpsons was developed. I had a friend in elementary school who looked a lot like Bart. He had relatively short blond hair in big spikes. Lisa’s hair, I don’t get, though.
Dagwood’s hair looks like it should stick out more than it does in those movie posters, but the images are a bit hard to make out on the website.
And NDP, I suddenly have a very vivid image of Charlie Brown as a real person, now.
The reason Dagwood’s hair is drawn that way is because of the hair oil that he would have used, the drawing depicts the shine of his hair. Dagwood was a gentleman, who came from a rich family. At the time, the “slicked back” hair was what gentlemen wore, while their lady relatives patiently knitted antimacassars for the furniture.
The focus in this clip is more on the (totally awesome) dancing, but Dagwood’s hair from the movies can be seen in action here. It doesn’t really stick out all that much, but there appear to be little wings at the front.
I can’t really picture what Charlie Brown’s hair would look like in real life, but that’s true, really, for all the Peanuts… they’ve all got weird hair. Linus, anyone?
Some day someone with a Charlie Brown 'do will catch the public’s eye and put the issue of what it would look like to rest, like when Condoleezza Rice came on the scene sporting her Lucy van Pelt.
