Castle 5.24 5/13/2013 "Watershed" (open spoilers)

Just watched this episode and there is a plot hole you can drive a truck through that’s driving me nuts.

Kate interviews for a federal task force job in DC, and gets the job. She keeps is secret from Castle, but he finds out when he finds her boarding pass to DC. So they get in a fight.

They both act all torn up about this move to DC. Castle is freakin’ rich. And he’s a writer. He doesn’t have to be sitting in a penthouse in New York to write. Why doesn’t he just move to DC too?

She said, when talking to her Dad, that the job wouldn’t leave any time for anything else, such as a relationship.

But I was thinking the same thing as you were. He could afford to keep the place in NYC for his mom and Alexis and go there whenever he missed them or the City, while maintaining a place in DC.

Most of the problem came from her keeping secrets, and his difficulty accepting that change is inevitable in a life like Beckett’s. They haven’t even tried talking over ways to make things work.

I wouldn’t call that a plot hole, but a device - He clearly loves NY and is his home. The problem was never with the potential move to DC, but with Kate’s hiding the possibility and the interview from him - his saying “you’re leaving me” at the time of that fight was his (as his mother pointed out) his “protection mode” kicking in.

Given that the show is set in NYC, him moving to DC would upend the rest of the cast.

In theory a “commuting” marriage could work, but it would leave too many gaps in the storyline.

Given that they both have commitment/relationship issues, Beckett’s ambition, and Castle’s reactionary tendencies, this is a huge, huge monkey wrench. In other words, a perfect cliffhanger.

It occurs to me that with that kind of job Beckett would actually not be working out of DC most of the time. She’d be assigned to big special investigations and might just as well be spending four months in Las Vegas then six months in New Orleans and so forth.

IOW, it probably wouldn’t help a bit if he moved to D.C.

Agreed - and how could they remain ‘partners’ in her new crime fighting role? Pretty sure the feds would not want that - but as for story possibilities - it could get more ‘fun’ for the show - especially if she gets to pick a team - but I don’t suspect they will go there.

I thought that might be pretty cool too. Solving the murder of the week in NY is starting to get a little old.

But I doubt they go there either. They’ll probably have Kate turn down the job, or the offer get withdrawn for some reason. Maybe because she busted the Senator wannabe.

What about the actual Senator (the one that had her mom killed)? Couldn’t he throw a monkeywrench into the works somehow?

Yeah, I don’t think I’m going to like how they resolve this. Castle made his case at the end based on a conversation with his mom. Beckett will only see him as playing emotional blackmail; whether it’s true or not. If she has to be the one that decides; it’s a no-win situation. Stay, and resent Castle; Go and feel guilty. Plus since it’s unlikely she’ll go as that would change the show too much; that’s not going to happen anyway. So the writers are going to write some crappy scenario where she has to stay in New York; but not of her own doing.

She could simply be assigned to New York… it’s big enough to need its own agent…

ETA - I will be impressed if they can resolve this in a good way -

:nodding:

Somebody downthread mentioned her being assigned to NYC if she takes the job. However, that doesn’t bode well for the rest of the cast. They’re going to write something really crappy to make her stay. And I’m going to be pissed off for her like you wouldn’t believe.

…on the other hand I wouldn’t mind if they came up with a reason to get rid of the overly cliche’ captain who’s in a perennially bad mood; with all the screaming and hating..

Meh. She’ll be “gone” foe one or two episodes, then return because of some convoluted plot device. They can’t do anything else without radically altering the tone and scope of the show, and that would negate Fillion’s charm.

What gets me is that Kate is not that great of a detective. Her TEAM, including Castle, are the ones who do the “outside the box” thinking.
In the episode where she got the job offer is was one of the guys who ran down rare bookshops and found purchasing patterns that lead to them finding the guy that dropped off map.

She can take the job and then fail and come back to NYC.

Ooohh, I could definitely see that happening. It also give a way to reboot the relationship story line of Castle and Beckett. They’ll be separated again; and take the rest of the season (or longer) to get back together because neither one of them know how to communicate .

I’d be very impressed if they went with a REAL change in the series. Something along the lines of her being allowed (after 2-3 episodes of doing it on the sligh) to “hire” Castle as a consultant and then following cases all over the country together, with a new group of supporting characters. But I doubt they’ll do that. I have confidence they’ll do something cliched and stupid.

Kate, I want you to have this job, of course the Board of Directors is under indictment and will be serving time.

To me, a perfect cliffhanger is one that wasn’t so cliche. From the second they got together, the obvious move was to make them break up to milk some sexual tension for another season. I wish the writers had proven better than that.

It could have been worse. They might have made Beckett pregnant.

Man I think that would be awesome! Of course as soon as they did that, for every episode that wasn’t top notch; people would be screaming that the show jumped the shark.
