No nod to “mystery”?
Ohh, that’s why. Funny stuff.
I thought it was vaguely charming but totally cliche. I’ll keep watching for the vaguely charming bits, I’d imagine, unless the total cliche runs me off.
In particular, the smart as a whip teenage daughter character and the slutty grandma are likely to grate on my nerves. Granny reminded me so much of Mona from Who’s the Boss that I cringed with every line she uttered.
Oh wow, you’re right! At least she didn’t have all that horrible bottle-red thin hair.
The characters are such clichés. But there are some seriously stupid contradictions to make them more “interesting,” like Castle proffering his daughter champagne and ranting/rambling at her refusal. And the cop saying, “don’t you want to know why?” Or what the story was, or whatever. Sorry, but if you’ve been a cop for long enough to become a detective, you know that much of the time, there isn’t a why. Or, certainly, not a narratively satisfying “why” that makes any sense. But it gave them a secret bond that only the audience is privy to, both being interested in the story, in the human motivations, blah, blah, blah.
Seriously hackish and formulaic writing. I really hope it gets better. Or Nathan Fillion gets naked. Whatever.
Definitely needs better writing.
The father-daughter relationship seems somehow weird. I can’t describe it, but maybe I’m just lucky to be unable to fathom having an irresponsible dad.
His mother I kind of liked, but she was nothing surprising. Castle rather reminds me of Captain Hammer, so there’s that. The female detective? Bleh. If she actually WAS dressing down, wearing no makeup (or no more powdered down than she has to be to look not like a ghoul on television), and had a severe hairdo, she still wouldn’t be a believably hard-as-nails cop lady. Is it so impossible to have a female lead who is actually strong and secure? Most women I’ve known who fit the general description of ‘strong female professional’ had healthy sex lives and it’s an obnoxious meme that femininity and professionalism are mutually exclusive. I didn’t hate her, but she could use some much better writing.
I watched it with a pair of Fillionphiles (is there a better name for his fans?) and we agreed that we would so not put up with that crap from anyone except MAYBE Nathan Fillion. We hooted at the “You could wear a little makeup!” comment made to a woman clearly fresh from a lipstick reapplication. We did groan a bit at the justification for Castle staying on with the department – yes, it was logical, but we could not fathom a reason that a police department would want this joker around.
I do have to say, the bit near the end
where the detective is telling Castle there’s a gun in the glove compartment and some body armor – this had us screaming OH NO WAY IS SHE – WHY WOULD THEY BRING THAT IDIOT – " and when she handcuffed him to the car we all cheered, and it
made me like the detective a lot more.
My cable company (and probably everywhere) is reshowing it tonight at 10:00. (For those who missed it.)
The comparisons to *Moonlighting *are interesting, but I thought it was closer to Remington Steel, as the non-detective looked to fiction to find the killer. I’ll watch more, but I hope the writing gets better.
What DID he say there, I couldn’t catch it either.
BTW www.castletv.net seems to be working again
The conversation goes
Richard: C’est apres minuit dans une school night. Don’t you turn into a pumpkin or something?
Alexis: Not when your dad’s been escorted away by cops. How was the slammer? Anyone make you their bitch?
Richard: Sorry, Switchblade. Still belong to you. Baby bird?
(offers the bottle of whipped topping)
Alexis: I already brushed.
Richard: Your loss.
It sounds ok on paper but it really doesn’t work the way they shot it.
Ep 2 just concluded tonight. Still a bit frenetic, but a somewhat better written story, IMO, although the ending grated (Fillion’s ridiculously blithe behavior and the lady detective’s rather weak verbal smackdown of his assholishness following the tense scene where the perp surrendered). Still, I’m kind of liking the Howard Hawksian tone of the dialogue, at least when I can hear it. Seems like I had trouble picking up every fifth line or so. Maybe I’m just getting old.
Also, seems so far like all the best murders happen on the upper west side. Can’t really see Castle running his schtick in the south Bronx, I guess.
Liked it. Missed the first one (thought it was on cable). After Serenity and Slither Fillion had the likes of Ebert calling him the next Harrison Ford, but he’s WORLDS better with a throwaway line.
Yeah, the show will live and die on the basis of his talent, especially since CSI: Miami was recently found to be the world’s most popular show , but the kid has the chops to pull the most mundane crap out of the toilet. And he’s also up against Medium…DUH!
There are other ways you can view it (legally) Link sbobet, Daftar Sbobet, Sbobet, Sbobet Casino, Sbobet Parlay
There’s one particular scene in Serenity where he actually LOOKS a little like Harrison Ford too
I did like the second episode better – possibly because there was less granny and genius daughter.
Saw it for the first time last night. The writing is a little sketchy.
But dammit, I love Fillion and the cop chick! I think they have great chemistry. But then I think Fillion always has that air about him.
[sub]it is possible I have a bit of a man-crush going on here[/sub]
The daughter can’t be that much of a genius. Did you see how much rice she fixed for three people? That was enough to feed an army.
They’re the low points for me too. That was some ridiculously unnatural dialogue.
Not a Firefly fan so maybe I’m biased, but Fillon beats every innuendo over the head with a lead skillet. It’s unwatchable.
I thought she was cleaning up what her Grandmother cooked.
It was better this time around.
I like it. Though I admit the only reason I watch it is because I find the female lead to be unbelievably hot.
They seem to do a lot of searches without warrants and interrogations without attorneys.
That one was a little patronising.
But then, that doesn’t seem to do CSI any harm, so what do I know?
