Castrated cats.

Had my cat done today, and ideas what effects this has on them, he’s about 7 months old?

Found this site, which appears to have some good info, by searching Yahoo! for “cat neuter faq”:

http://www.kittenrescue.org/spayneuter.htm

It didn’t seem to affect my former kitty any, beyond the fact that he quit spraying, which he had done exactly ONCE before we had him at the vet. He’s never missed 'em.

Damn.

Now I’m having an Andrew Lloyd Website moment.

Castrated cats come out tonight,
Castrated cats, we’ve snipped them off…

Most cats are absolutely fine after the procedure.

In some cases, cats will be lethargic the day of the procedure. They should be fine the next day.

Feed small meals and small amounts of water. The anesthesia can sometimes cause stomach upset and nausea.

If the cat is lethargic, not acting like himself, vomiting, or having diarrehea, call your vet immediately.

In the office where I work, the procedure takes less than 5 minutes. The anesthesia only lasts that long and most cats are a little bit groggy for an hour or two after. We release neutered cats the same day, unless they have a problem.

I took in a stray male. He was intact, and about 15 months old (everyone in the neighbourhood knew which litter he came from).

I had him neutered. Gradually his aggression to other animals reduced. Now he will fluff his tail, howl, and run after foxes, but he will also leave a brewing fight if I call him. An un-neutered male will fight until blood is drawn (at least, this one used to).

Aside from that he looks very healthy and quite muscular.

At that age, neutering should keep him from developing unpleasant habits like spraying and fighting, and he’ll have to double up on that ass-licking since he has no balls to lick. That ought to be the extent of the long-term effects.

Well you could get you cat prosthetic testicles:
Neuticals

Well, you could, but you’d be making your cat and yourself the laughing stock of the vet clinic staff. If you want to shell out that kind of money so the techs can hereafter refer to you as “that nut who wanted the fake balls for his cat,” then by all means go ahead. We’ll gladly take your cash.

Besides, cat’s don’t seem to be nearly as fascinated with ball-licking as dogs. Cats are, in my experience, far more assiduous ass lickers than ball lickers.

Not much change right now, except for finding it hard to sit down for a week, but it will stop him staying out for days & coming back with torn ears in the future.

Actually, I was trying to add a little humor but obviously not very successfully. I have 4 neutered males in my family: a cat, 2 dogs, and horse. I haven’t found the need to enhance their manhood with prosthetic balls.

My cat was really pissed off at me for a few days, but he eventually got over it. The operation seems to have rid him of some very exasperating aggressive habits (shredding everything that crossed his path (carpets, furniture, posters, and my toes at 4 a.m.).

He also gained a TON of weight right afterward; I left the country for the summer, and when I got back, I almost didn’t recognize him. It might have had something to do with him my roommate fed him while I was gone, but nearly 8 years later, I haven’t managed to get him back down to his former weight. Ever try putting a cat on a diet? I’ve tried it all; limiting food intake, using low-cal kitty food, etc. He just gets really cranky and bites me at 4 a.m. I finally decided it was better to have an overweight, yet extremely happy and affectionate cat that a slim and psychotic one.

No, no; you succeeded. I couldn’t get past the home page of neuticles.com before I had tears rolling down my face, from laughing so hard.

I suspect, though I don’t know the lady, that CrazyCatLady was also being humorous. At least, I found it amusing.

I don’t see what’s so funny about fake testicles. I wear a pair or two before hitting the bars. True, I haven’t gotten lucky yet, but cats start following me when I walk down the street.

The only effect it had on my cat was to make him afraid of car rides.

Before his surgery he liked to ride in the car now he is terrified. I guess he wonders if he’s going back there and what they will take next.

Thanks for being a responsible pet owner.
