Over the summer I’ve been acquiring some casual skirts and dresses, which I wore with simple moccasins or my trusty Birkenstock clogs (shut up, they’re good for my feet). Denim, faux suede, that sort of thing. Most are about mid-calf length.
Now that fall’s here, I’d like to continue wearing them through the winter, but I’m gonna need some more solid casual footwear.
I have some low boot/shoes similar to these, in tan and black, that I’ve worn with longer skirts and dresses, but generally whatever stockings I’m wearing don’t show. But these new skirts are generally shorter than ankle length.
Is there some sort of rule as to the relative height of the shoe and the hem of the skirt? Must they either overlap or have some minimum distance between hem and shoe? I’ve ordered a variety of colors of opaque tights, but I’m a bit lost as to shoes. Do I need to find some knee-high boots?
No heels, please, and nothing too fancy. Very casual, but OK for rural winter wear. So not pumps, but not mukluks either.
Even some links to pictures of women wearing skirts/dresses with casual footwear would be a help. Most of the catalogs I receive seem to concentrate on either the skirt or the shoes and don’t have a lot of full-length shots with the type of shoes/boots I might wear.
I am certainly not one to give fashion advice, but I’ll put in my two cents worth and then will follow any responses you get.
I think the shoes you pictured with a skirt is kind of a funky/cute combo, and though I own two pair just like in the picture, I wouldn’t pair it that way for the simple fact that I could never pull it off. I love the idea of a knee-high boot with a longer skirt though, and it’s something I may do this year.
Yeah, see, that’s a bit more dressy than what I’m envisioning. I also have a pair of black loafers, which would be more along the right lines, but they’re a bit slippy and rather flimsy for winter wear in rural Wisconsin. Which is why I’m thinking a shoe or bootie that covers at least the whole foot, if not an actual boot.
I just wonder if the ones I have would be OK, or if wearing them with a skirt that would be short enough to show my stockings above the shoe would be dorky. I haven’t gotten around to trying it out in front of the mirror yet, but I’m thinking “dorky.”
I’m wondering too. Almost all my work clothes are summery dresses that wouldn’t work with any kind of shoe in February, but I do have two acceptable long skirts, and always thought knee boots were the only answer.
Yeah, maybe something like that, but without the heel. I have a pair of boots (burgundy!) with a heel about like that, and my feet are killing me after I wear them all day, so unfortunately I don’t wear them often.
So – so far it appears that yes, I’m gonna have to go shopping for tall boots, huh? I’d probably try to find brown first, then maybe black. Those are my two “gotta have” colors, to go with everything.
$298 is pretty steep, but then again I just paid $300 for a custom-made leather purse, so I guess it’s all in the priorities.
Stay away from ankle boots with mid-calf skirts, they’ll just make you look frumpy. Stick with mid-calf or knee-high boots.
These or thesemight be along the lines of what you’re looking for. These Hunters aren’t quite as stylish, but they’ll hold up to a Wisconsin winter very well. My favorite kind of boot for this fall is a slouchy suede boot like these. They look really great with a dress or skirt and can easily be waterproofed.
The black ones (first three links) . . . dunno how easy it is to goosestep in a skirt. Maybe they don’t look so severe in other colors. :: checks :: Ooh yeah, hot pink! And some of the browns look nice.
I would say go with knee high boots but that is just because it gets freaking cold up here and a skirt with flats when it gets down to 40 degrees in the fall would be uncomfortably cold.
