I’ve tried Googling for pointers, but I’m not having any luck.
What guidelines should I observe when picking out a pair of shoes to go with a certain style or length of skirt? I can tell when something looks awkward or ill-chosen on another woman, but somehow I can’t envision what’s the best choice. I have a couple of those skirts which fit at the hip level but flounce out a little below that (they were really popular last year), and I have no idea what looks good with them.
Where are those bitchy what-not-to-wear girls when I need them?
I think I know what you mean and I’ve seen a lot of women wear them with espadrille-type wedges or flats if they’re casual, and with fancier sandals if they’re dressier. Some people wear them with pumps but that doesn’t look right to me. Do you have any pictures?
Magazines like InStyle and Marie Claire are usually pretty on the ball with things like this (fashion advie: yes, sex advice: run screaming).
Can you find a pic of the skirt you mean?
In general, I find ballet flats work well with the majority of longer skirts (knee and below), especially those that have a bit of volume. Unless you’ve got kick ass legs, you probably want heels with shorter skirts. Ankle boots are tough to pull off with most looks. Knee-high boots can be nice with a shorter skirt, though they can give off a retro feel, and often look awkward if paired with a too-long skirt.
Since they’re a bit passe, they were hard to find online, but this Ralph Lauren one comes close. You’re right, a pump doesn’t seem the thing, and my black work shoes are kind of baby-doll style, and they look too precious with this style of skirt. Maybe some ballet flats?
ETA: Good God, there are some gorgeous clothes at that Ralph Lauren website. I wish I hadn’t found it.
They sure do. I took one look and ran away. I just donated and traded away a bunch of work and dressier clothes and about 40 pairs of shoes when I retired because I know that I’ll never need them again but I still haven’t come close to not getting clothes lust when I look at them. I need clothing to work out and work around the property in but I have so many shirts, sweaters and jackets that I should never need to buy expensive clothes again. Or shoes. Definitely not shoes. I still have at least 20 pairs left. My shopping spree days for things I don’t need are over.
I do the opposite , I wear with flatter shoes, either flats, or shorter heeled with shorter skirts in order to avoid a too trampy look. Once it hits knee length, then I will wear knee high boots, and heels/pumps. With long skirts depending on how dressy the shirt is, I will go with very high heeled shoes, or flats.
For a skirt similar to that one, I would probably go for a slingback with about an inch of heel or perhaps a wedge for evening and for day, a flat ballet slipper.
I think you could pull off an ankle boot like these just fine. They would look really cute paired with that Ralph Lauren skirt and tights. Or if you’re going for more of a spring/summer look, a sandal with a low stacked heel or a ballet flat.
