Cat piss

Why does my cats pee smell so dogawful strong? Its enough to run you out of the house. When I woke up this morning I could tell he just pee’d and that was on the other side of the house!

Does any of this factor in? He is an inside male cat, almost a year old but not neutured yet. Its not spray, its pee eminating from his box. There is always fresh water but he doesnt drink much and probably only pee’s every other day I would guess, or at least the strong smell is only every other day. (I dont scoop, not my job so I cant be sure). He eats 2 small bowls of Kit 'n Kaboodle (sp) every day. Do you suppose changing his diet and or getting him neutered would help?

Gack.

The large annoying cat pissed all over a large pile of clothes yesterday, that my roommate (its owner) failed to pick up. I think my throat became sore from the fumes. Am I imagining things?

And yet it still smells better than your feet, Whammo.

Cat pee is pretty concentrated, as you note. You might consider using a covered cat box with a charcoal filter (e.g. the Boodabox). I’ve found that works pretty well.

When the “little darling” widdles on your clothes, add some vinager to the wash water and it will eliminate most of the odor.

I never knew so many people had such an aversion to cornchips!

Vinegar and water. Lots and lots of water, to dilute the odor. God, if a cat piddled on my clothes, I’d just about throw them out. Luckily, my cats wake me up when they have to go (they’re only in at night), so I just open the door for them.

Yes, definitely have the male cat neutered. Even if he’s indoors and doesn’t spray now, he will eventually feel the need to mark his territory. In most cases neutering cuts down on this tremendously, but not entirely. My male cat still ‘expresses his glands’ like a small canister of mustard gas, but at least he has the courtesy to do it outside. And he only does it every other day or so. I’d imagine this is actually what you’re smelling, in fact. Cat pee is obnoxious, but cat spray is just noxious.

If, God forbid, one gets the odor in ones car, there is one deodorizer that my mother recommended that helps. After cleaning things up as best you can with vinegar and water, place a small plate of cut up apple chunks on the front or back floor, wherever smell was strongest. Keep the car closed up. Believe me, the apples dry up and shrivel, rather than rotting into a mess of their own. I have used it twice and it really does work, for me at least.

That would be why it smells so strong.
Cat + Puberty = Stinky Pee
The hormones of a male cat affect the stench of its pee. Get him snipped (just about the simplest veterinary procedure, by the way, after nail trimming) before he starts to spray, or he may not stop.

His diet, as you have indicated it, doesn’t add too much to the aromaticism.
-Rue.

Yes, get him neutered. If he’s not spraying, he probably will be shortly. My cat was neutered at six months, and he had already sprayed once or twice. He hasn’t done it since, though there are a few cats who do, I’ve heard. I’d have suspected mine of being one of them prior to the snip, because he’s so…so very male, but nope. (He humps a towel on a daily basis. I wish I was joking. He really gets into it, and then he hops down off the sofa and starts licking himself. As if I WANT to see my cat masturbate.)

Also, this is sorta off topic, but you should be happy that he does pee. A couple of years ago my cat had a horrendous urinary blockage and if I hadn’t caught it in time he could have died. I’ve been watching him pee, gratefully, ever since. (And paying $10 for a four-pound bag of prescription food.) But he’s worth it.

This is a very pro-neutering board. Not that I have anything against it, but my cat Batman’s neutering was so strongly advocated here that I almost suspected a hidden agenda. Responsibly, however, they dissuaded me from performing the operation myself.

Dude, neuter. It’s not like you’re going to mate him anyway. Better to live your life dreamless than to know they’re nothing more.

Whatever that means.

get a female (much cleaner) then intall a cat flap, simple!

My cat is enough of a handful without the testosterone that’d be in his system if I hadn’t had him neutered. Really, unless you’re breeding, what’s the point of NOT neutering or spaying? It’s easy, quick, and inexpensive.

Trust me. He doesn’t miss them in the slightest.

Tips for getting out piss odors?

Gee, have I stumbled into a Dear Heloise page?

Whammo, if your cat really doesn’t drink much water and only pees every other day, talk to your vet NOW. Cats who don’t drink enough are at vastly increased risk of developing the dreaded blockage, which can be rapidly fatal. Make sure that his water is always fresh and that his litter box is clean so he doesn’t hold it in or – surprise – pee on clothing on the floor. (Yes, I know they sometimes do that even if their box is clean. Nothing was being implied.)

And, yes, I’d have to vote with the rest of the crowd – nip his nethers ASAP. Cat pee is no bargain under the best of circumstances, but boy cat pee is totally foul.
