Cat question

I have two boy cats which I got from the vet school here in town about three years ago. Supposedly, they were neutered before I adopted them, but lately they are behaving in a way that makes me wonder.

First, my big dumb Lloyd has a habit of pointing his rear end at things and rattling his tail in a peculiar fashion while his front end does a little dance. No fluids exit his body, but he seems to think he is marking his territory. This part isn’t such a recent development. He’s been shaking his booty since he was a kitten. However, in the last few weeks, his brother Bruno has been seen several times to mount Lloyd from behind while biting him on the back of the neck.

The question: Is it possible my furballs have…well…balls? They don’t go out any more, but I’d hate to think that they might have ever been responsible for any litters of unwanted kittens.

Have they ever been to the vet? If so, it will be noted in their records. If not, it is high time they went.

I’m guessing that a vet school would not adopt out non-neutered cats.

Well, according to the vet school, they were neutered, but since it is a school, it makes me wonder if maybe a student didn’t snip everything they should have snipped!

The vets they’ve seen since then didn’t mention anything unusual.

If they have nuts, there’ll be very a obvious bollock sack hanging below the anus.

The shaking the arse thing is just marking territory - my neutered female does this all the time, but nothing comes out (thank God).

Finally, sexual behaviour does occur even in neutered cats.

I guess what I meant to say is that your vet will have noted on the cat’s chart whether it is neutered or not after the initial examination.

It sounds to me like pretty normal cat behavior. My spayed female Jack Russell will sometimes mount another dog during play. It is more about dominance than sex.

It is normal. Even after being neutered, males will exhibit behavior like that.

Also, as jjimm says, you’d see if there were balls there.

If this is new behavior for your boys it might be that there is another cat coming into their lives – one they see through the window in the yard or something. My boys will act out lots of dominance behavior with each other whenever the neighbor’s cat comes into the yard where they can see it. It’s like they can’t get at the intruder so they take it out on each other.

So it’s wrong of me to refer to my dominant cat as “that brotherf*ucking Bruno”? Good to know.

Not always. Sometimes one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum from their point of origin near the kidney. Cryptorchidism (hidden testicle) is the term that describes this pathology. You can check for the presence of testosterone by examining the cat’s penis. In the presence of testosterone, there will be many barbs on the penis. No testosterone = no barbs.

Finding a cat’s penis and extruding it from its prepuce should be done by a pro.

hastily puts down violated cat

Oh, certainly! I’ll have the kitties checked for that sometime.

It’s normal. Some males will continue to “fake” spray and others just lose that desire completely. My cat Geoff does that alot as do several of my Mom’s neutered males. Only two actually spray things, however. They are also the two “rapey” cats. They often mount the other boys.

Every cat I’ve ever had was neutered, and some of them exhibited the exact behavior you’ve described. With my last pair of neutered males, one did the mounting/neck-biting thing, and the other apparently enjoyed it. Just like people.
