Guys, the guy was mad because of the Saint Anthony joke, which he figured out way later. This part is not included in the quote from this thread, but you can find it at the beginning of chapter 5, page 22 in my book version.
Yossarian also basically explains this afterwards, which leads to a recall of “who is saint Anthony?”.
No. It is PART OF the censorship of the time. The writers of around 1960-70 or so could include raunchy topics and stories… but only in veiled, indirect language. Earlier, they couldn’t tell such stories at all, or only in much, much more indirect ways. Later, they could say fuck all they wanted to.
