CBC and CTV, Canada’s major TV networks, should stop giving so much air time to fluff pieces on the American election, particularly the “lipstick on a pig” non-story.
There is a big wide world out there, with a lot of very important stuff going on in it that I would like to hear about. Heck, we even have our own federal election going on that the moment. Wasting precious national network news time on “Lipstick on a Pig” and other such non-stories is unfortunate.
Heck, I wish American news would do the same. This kind of story gets tons of coverage while the majority of Americans are unable to describe what the candidates’ stances are on actual issues. It is stupid beyone belief that I can find 10 different links to this story on major new sites but I have to dig around if I want to know how exactly Obama intends to transition us to a new health care system. There are major major issues and big changes at stake here people! I for one care how some of it is going to be implemented!
Each side pretends to be more offended by the other. Who cares. Tell me what you are going to do as president and STFU. Enough with all the cute sound bites and cliches on both sides.
Yesterday Sen. Obama not only took the McCain campaign to task for slinging such obvious crap, but also gave the media a good reaming for wasting two days on such a non-story. (Yesterday’s Countdown ran his comments at length, if you want to hear them.) As a lapsed idealist, I found it decidedly heartwarming that there are still a few folks out there who think campaigns (and the coverage thereof) are supposed to be about issues, not horseshit.
I’ve pretty much stopped watching tv news because of just that.
I’m, barely, old enough to remember when Canada AM was a relatively heavy news show and The National did real analysis rather than rehashed pundidtry. I mostly get the news via radio (CBC) and they’re better; but not by much.
That talking monk’s-head Mansbridge should being chewing on shame like jerky for what he’s a part of.
You’re 100% correct Muffin. Our networks should be focusing on the upcoming Canadian election.
They no doubt will, probably sometime after October 05 or so.
The thing is, can you really fault them for covering an electoral race that is quite possibly one of the most interesting/fascinating in recent democratic history?
What gets to be sicking is all the rest of the world will once again act like the election had 100% backing for whoever wins. They won’t even remember the stuff they watched showing the fact that all Americans don’t vote for the same person. They still act like the people that voted for others than Bush both elections don’t exist is this country. He won by about 1% of the votes foreigners. Half the country didn’t want him. I guess if you don’t riot in the streets this point gets forgotten.
Yeah… I’ve gotten into some arguments online about this, and it gets tiresome. Another thing along those lines is that we are not all cowboys, even though some Senators from ranching states often rise to great prominence.
It’s like we have to educate some people all the time. Unanimous vote? That’s how we do it in criminal juries, not elections.
