Just as the post-season starts, CC is entering rehab and will miss it. I don’t know if this is the reason for his dismal season, but I hope he fixes himself and can return for another good to very good season or three.
He didn’t have that great of a year. But that’s a hell of a time to hang 'em up.
Was he told he wasn’t making the post season roster? Seems like a convenient excuse
He probably would have been on the post season roster. There’s a lot of talk that he got completely out of control at the WC clinch celebration and that was a sign that he had a serious problem.
He was actually pitching well since he came off the DL and got a different leg brace. In five starts since then, he was 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA. So I think this was entirely alcohol-related and had nothing to do with his pitching. I can’t imagine how bad things must have been to go into rehab now.
Here’s more on signs leading up to this. Kudos to him for prioritizing this over a game.
It is a shame for the Yanks, he probably would have been the 4th man in the post season rotation if the Yanks beat Houston tonight, but if he needs to get himself better, all to the good that he is doing something. I hope he recovers and comes back strongish or retires and doesn’t drag it out one way or the other.
Am I a bad person for thinking that, if at all possible, he really should have waited until after the postseason? There’s just a huge difference in terms of both convenience for him, and his obligations to others, between going now as compared with going 2 weeks from now (give or take), but probably not a lot difference in efficacy of treatment between now and then. I mean, if you’re anything resembling a functional alcoholic (and I have to imagine he mostly is, if he’s been able to pitch at his level) … I don’t know, practical concerns can shape how and when you seek treatment.
Obviously I don’t know the particulars. There are all sorts potential psychological and physiological complications that would constitute good reasons for not waiting; I guess what I’m saying is, I think he kinda needs one.
Seems to me he’s broken his contract. No?
The guy is a professional and hasn’t been one to exaggerate injuries to get time off. I have no doubt this had to be extremely serious and there had to be an excellent reason for him to take this step now instead of waiting. It’s not just about efficacy of treatment now versus in two weeks. It could be about what will have happened to his family, his career and reputation, and is he even going to be alive in 2 weeks. Hard-core alcoholism isn’t something you just “buck up” and power through for a couple weeks.
No, it’s an illness. You haven’t broken your contract because you have an injury that requires hospitalization. This is the same issue legally.
Don’t illnesses normally require doctors to diagnose them? Has he been diagnosed? Because the stories I read didn’t sound like that.
From what I’ve read, he will have absolutely no problem getting a doctor to diagnose alcoholism.
There’s no real secrets kept from the press when it comes to the Yankees. I’m sure everything that needed to be done before the announcement was done, and everything was cleared.
I think it’s pretty honorable for him to say he will be better for his team in rehab than on the mound. Or, accept the fact when someone told him that was the case.
I don’t believe in the disease theory of alcoholism and I think this was a lousy thing to do to his team. No, I don’t think the because he drank a lot the past week he’s an ‘alcoholic’ in need of 30 days of new age woo.
Admittedly, I don’t follow the Yankees and actively avoid them on tv, but from his stats and fantasy numbers, it looks like he’s been basically a 5th starter and probably wouldn’t have had a big role in the playoffs, maybe as a long relief role for a game that gets way out of hand early.
Then I’ll give your opinion on this subject the same consideration as I give a YEC’s on evolution.
It is kind of sad. With his money, he could have purchased many different mood changing drugs. But, he was forced into alcohol addiction because they don’t test for hangovers.
I hope he has a speedy and effective rehab.
Your opinion is noted and given all the consideration it deserves.

Then I wonder why the manager was quoted in today’s paper as saying he was “astonished” when he was told this week.
Not if the Yankees agree that’s what he should do.
From the NY Times.
