Anyone know any good techno CDs? To give you an idea of what I like: I like Crystal Method’s “Vegas” CD, but not their new one. I also like Prodigy’s “Fat of the Land” and a couple of Propellerheads songs I’ve heard (“Take California” and, obviously, “Spybreak” ). I know there’s a lot out there, so this is kind of a vague question, but I thought I’d try anyway. Thanks!
leftfield’s “leftism”, instant classic
underworld "Second Toughest in the Infants "
…and maybe the otherworldly “fight club”-soundtrack by the dust brothers.(highly recommended)
‘Techno’ is a pretty broad term; from the groups you mentioned, I’d recommend looking at big beat artists like Fatboy Slim, the Chemical Brothers, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Lo-Fidelity Allstars, Pepe Deluxe and Death in Vegas.
Good albums:
You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby by Fatboy Slim
Contino Sessions by Death in Vegas
Music For The Jilted Generation by The Prodigy
Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers
(etc, etc)
There’s also a huge number of big beat compilations out there: things like Fatboy Slim’s On The Floor At The Boutique, and some crossover albums like Primal Scream’s Xtrmntr or Daft Punk’s entire catalogue of retro-style big beats.
Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll check some of those out.
I’ve also been trying to navigate my way through techno/world trance/acid jazz/etc. shelves to find stuff I really like.
There sure is a lot of stuff you have to filter through to find the nuggets you really like.
I enjoy a lot of the travel series on Six Degrees. I particulary love the Bob Holroyd cd, but the latin stuff is finding its way onto my player more and more too. The Traveler '99-'01 compilations are excellent as well for sampling a bunch of artists at a time.
I also like St. Germaine and Propellerheads a lot as well.
If anyone is familiar with these and can recommend something similar I’d appreciate the help in the search.
Thanks.
I also recommend anything by Fatboy Slim or the Chemical Brothers, especially the CB’s Dig Your Own Hole and Fatboy’s You’ve Come a Long Way Baby. If you like Fat of the Land, I’m sure you’ll like these two albums as well.
Not really big beat, but Let’s Get Killed by David Holmes is excellent, as is Prince Blimey by Red Snapper, Unreasonable Behaviour by Laurent Garnier and Avant Hard by Add N To (X).
I can’t really recommend any CDs or specific artists, but you might want to check out http://www.mp3.com and their techno charts. It’s divided into quite a few subcategories so you can figure out what you really like, and I’ve found that a lot of unknown bands/DJs or whatever you call techno music makers are just as good as the popular stuff.
Daft Punk has a few good tracks.
