Can anyone recommend a well-produced one? I want to use it to lull me to sleep.
Thanks

LaserLight Digital has a whole line of Sounds of Nature CDs. I personally recommend their Thunderstorm, Rainforest, and Mountain Stream CDs.
They are available at Wal-Mart.
I haven’t seen a CD, but a friend of mine has a white noise machine that has a rain/thunder setting on it. Maybe you could find one of those. I’ll see her later today – I’ll ask her the brand and where she bought it.
I didn’t want to go the “white noise” route, because the good ones are so expensive and with the not-so-good ones you can hear the “seams”. (the place where they make the loop start over)
Thanks

Well, let’s see, in my hand I’ve got…
‘Thunderstorm’, Madacy Music Group.
‘Misty Forest Morning’, Sequoia records.
And I know you asked for no music, but ‘Dreamland’ (music-Scott fitzgerald/enviromental recordings-Richard Hooper) combines both soooooo much better than anything else, if this doesn’t put you to sleep - nothing will! It even comes with a warning not to listen to while driving. Get this one. World Disc Music, Nature recordings.
And then, of course, there’s 'Van Halen’s Mean Streets.
Oh, and Target (the store) usually has a display that will allow you to previw just such CDs.
There is a radio station that plays white noise. I don’t know the exact frequency, but you might be able to find it if you check around the dial.

I’ve used this CD for falling asleep purposes with a personal CD player and tiny nonpowered speakers. It works great for me. I also put it on my stereo through the real speakers and pretend I’m at the beach.
I got my copy at Circuit City for about $2.00
There are a whole bunch of them.
Thanks for the smiles, DP!

There’s a few of them, actually. In my area, both 102.6 and 94.2 are white noise.
You can also go to http://www.winmx.com and download the rain/thunderstorm sounds. If I remember right, just enter “nature sounds” as the search term. There’s one that goes for 26 minutes.
I downloaded winsite, and did a search, but found nothing. The applications seem a little complicated. Looks like about a hundred Mp3 sites to choose from. Got any advice?
Thanks

I also use mine on Halloween - stick the speakers in the window, and put the CD on ‘repeat’. Great atmosphere (plus, it’s fun watching the folks half a block away looking up at the sky when the thunder goes off!).
I ‘hear’ you, Quasi.
On vacation in Colorado this summer I videotaped 45 minutes of the stream by our cabin. We either use it as video background while puttering around the house or at night as audio to sleep by.
ZZZzzzzzzzZZZzzzzzZZZzzzz…
Hey Q, do you have an ICQ number? If you do, I can add you to my list and send it to you that way. E-mail me about it as I don’t always get back in here to check responses. As far as not finding winmx to DL the rain sounds yourself, I don’t know. Going to check though…
…but I don’t ICQ no mo’. My e-mail address is in my profile if you wanna communicate that way.
Otherwise, welcome to SDMB and more specifically to The Cafe Society. Hope you feel as comfortable in here as I have come to feel…comfortable…in here.
(I hope to become a better writer!)
Jump in anywhere!

Well, wish I’d thought to ask about this a couple months ago…I bought a sounds -of -nature type CD (don’t know the exact name) this summer to play in hopes of lulling myself to sleep. Very soothing ocean waves breaking upon the shore, unfortunately interrupted by a shrieking seagull. Jeez!
