Celebrities everyone likes

Because it would border on blasphemy, like mentioning Jesus in this thread would be. Duh!

I like Oprah Winfrey.

Wow, that’s just bizarre to me. I’m not even a fan of any of her film roles except Winter’s Bone, but…she comes across in her public life as friendly, funny, and grounded, and she reacted to the whole Fappening mess as well as anyone possibly could have. I actually gained respect for her in the wake of that.

What do people dislike about her?

Or for falls from grace that are less out-and-out felonious, but still pretty horrible: 10-15 years ago, Mel Gibson was considered a Good Guy in Hollywood.

Better than met: my wife was his gofer for pretty much a whole day when he had a signing/reading/speaking appearance at the big public library here in SLC years ago. Almost any celebrity can be charming in five-minute doses, but seven or eight hours of dealing with someone whose only job is to bring you the things you want is likely to bring out more of the “real” personality underneath.

After a day of being at Neil’s beck and call, my wife had two observations: he doesn’t like Earl Grey tea; and yes, he really is that nice.

There’s a picture of them together on one of our bookshelves.

The late Tony Gwynn was beloved by baseball fans and was known to be literally one the nicest people in the world.

Took me a moment to process Tony and baseball, because my mind saw “Gwynn” and immediately went to “Fred” (yeah, I know now it’s Gwynne). I’ve never read or heard anyone saying a cross word about working with him.

While we all know about his couch-dancing meltdowns and…well, Scientology…Tom Cruise is reportedly fantastic to work with. Not necessarily easy, as he’s very demanding of himself and those working with him, but he’s apparently very kind and respectful to everyone on set, top-to-bottom.

On podcasts I’ve heard several people say he is very generous with his time for those starting out and is very quick to give advice. The first piece of advice he gives everyone is there are many people who are working hard to make the project work and you should treat all of them with kindness and respect. He seems to live by that and treats all the crew very well.

Stan Musial has been mentioned a couple of times. It is very, very hard to find anyone who will say something bad about him. Bob Costas famously said “All Musial represents is more than two decades of sustained excellence and complete decency as a human being.”

Some guy named Murray Chass wrote a blog a few years ago making accusations about Musial based on the fact that the restaurant Musial part-owned in the 60s turned away black patrons. In response, almost everyone called Chass a crank. Unabashed Musial fan Joe Posnanski wrote a nice piecepointing out that Chass’s post was garbage. Curt Flood, who was turned away by the restaurant (apparently by front-line employees) also defended Musial. He noted that Musial was “livid” when he heard the story and vowed to make sure it didn’t happen again. Flood stated

(And take a moment to ponder that Curt Flood, himself a great player, wanted Musial’s autograph.)

Anyway, Flood apparently has criticized Musial somewhat for what he saw as Musial’s naivety during the labor struggles of the 60s. So that’s the worst thing I know of anyone saying about Musial. That he was naïve about labor issues. He was, after all, a guy who gave back part of his salary when he had a bad year. So, I can imagine Flood was frustrated with him, as Flood was trying to challenge the reserve clause and win more power for players. But even so, Flood still thought Musial was a “good, decent, and honorable man”.

Bob Gibson, never one to shy away from speaking his mind, called Musial the nicest man he ever met in baseball. Bob Gibson probably brushed back his own teammates during practice, ferchrissake. And he thought Musial was a swell guy.

So, yeah. Musial seemed to be pretty OK for the most part.

Speaking of people who cheated on their wife…

Me. Sure, I’m not a celebrity now but when I am, everybody will like me.
And I won’t cheat on my wife.

Have you heard about Earl the Grumpy Puppy? He’s quite a celebrity in these parts.

Yeah, OJ Simpson was thought to be a nice guy too, until his true self was revealed.

Keith Jackson and Walter Conkrite!

Grumpy Catfish.

I remember one where a young man in the audience asked if he could get a hug (or kiss) and she obliged. She seems to be genuinely nice and grateful for all the things she has.

Actually, it was Curt Flood, Jr. (son of the Cardinal) who sought signatures from Stan the Man that day.

Of course. I am an idiot and missed that. :smack:

Thanks.

ETA: And what’s worse, reading the article again, it’s obvious from context that the statement was from Curt Jr (and from the fact that it’s headed as a statement from Curt Jr.) (and from the fact that Curt Sr. had been dead for some years by the time of the statement). Jesus. I’m a damned idiot.

The nicest man in the world (allegedly).

Matt Damon? I heard Brad Pitt say he is the nicest guy on the planet.

Among celebrities I’ve actually met, it has to be Bill Nye the Science Guy. I met him at an event once and spent an afternoon in close proximity to him. Grown men were falling all over themselves to shake his hand, and he was unfailingly nice and cheerful throughout the entire time.

He’s no longer with us, but I don’t think I ever heard anything bad about Patrick Swayze.
