Celebrities who were universally beloved by their peers

Yes, he said this on Howard Stern’s show last year.
Speaking of Henry Winkler, isn’t he well liked by his peers? Except for Tom Hanks I assume.

He did have a falling-out with Harold Ramis after Groundhog Day, and they didn’t reconcile until shortly before Ramis’s death in 2014: How Groundhog Day Ruined Bill Murray And Harold Ramis’ Partnership | Cinemablend

If your kids get these books, really, it’s OK to let them read them. My local library and thrift stores get stacks of these donated, and they usually appear unopened. :frowning:

I’ve heard that the Osmonds have an almost-unequaled level of respect in the music business - and I’ve also heard the converse. Guess it would depend on who you talk to.

We get used kids books on occasion (the good ones tend to get destroyed through overuse), and we have a couple of those- that’s how I heard about the program. Perfectly fine children’s books- no idea why people wouldn’t read them to their kids- it only takes 10-15 minutes to read several books to your kid each night.

Let’s add Betty White to this list. I’ve never heard a bad word about her.

The same was said about Betsy Palmer. She was asked about this once when she was a panelist on some game show and said “Oh, you can never be too nice!”

On last week’s WWDTM podcast extra, Miles Doornbos and Peter Segal were talking about how they were so in awe of how great Carol Burnett was and Miles said that she was the greatest guest ever in his opinion- warm, friendly, charming, and a great warm up conversation before she got on the show. Peter asked him who were some other notable guests in this regard and Miles said that Kim Kardashian was #2 in his experience with all of the guests over the years.

As much as I hate to have to say anything good about that bunch, I remember reading somewhere online a couple of months ago that a woman who works at an expensive boutique clothing store had Kim and Kris come in one day and she said that unlike most of their customers they were both very nice. And to give props where due, I’ve been impressed with Khloe over Lamar Odom’s situation. Of all the Kardashians she been the one I liked the least, but she really toughed it out and stayed right by Lamar’s side during the time when it looked like he would die, and now she’s stepping up and putting her life on hold for however many months it takes to get him well.

I really, really hope I don’t wind up having to change my mind about them.

Broderick Crawford (according to a colleague of mine who had worked as a cameraman for a Hollywood studio.)

My stepdaughter shared a table with Uma Thurman at the Cannes Film Festival, and said she was absolutely wonderful, and everyone genuinely liked her.

I haven’t seen Dick Van Dyke mentioned yet. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy with nary an ill word spoken about him.

I’ve been introducing my stepson to Star Trek and happened to look up some stuff on DeForest Kelley…I had a vague thought that he wound up as a hard-drinking crusty old goat but was pleased to read that he was evidently warm, friendly and much loved by fans as well as the other members of ST:TOS.

When you’re famous for merely being famous, there’s no fallback to “fuck you guys, I’m an ARTISTE” that some actors have.

But as much as I don’t give a flying fuck about that entire family, it is good to hear that she (at least at that time) hadn’t picked up her husband’s arrogance.

Bea Arthur disliked her for some idiosyncratic reason. Of course Bea Arthur was herself not a terribly cuddly person or universally beloved.

As for Tom Cruise, I imagine Paul Haggis isn’t exactly one of his fans.

How is Robert Redford’s reputation? I haven’t heard anything against him, but I might easiliy have missed some kerfuffle.

But the reason I really entered the thread was to nominate someone I’m kind of surprised no one else has mentioned: Michael Palin. He seems to have managed to remain in good standing with the other Pythons (Eric Idle possibly excepted, but Idle appears to be a money-grubbing twit who ran afoul of the others as well), and he’s consistently called the nicest man in the UK. In his diaries and every interview he comes across as humble, thoughtful, intellectually curious and charming. He’s also been married for nearly 50 years (anniversary is next year!) and I’ve never heard a whiff of scandal surrounding his personal life.

I’ll also nominate the late Paul Eddington, from Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister, and The Good Life/Good Neighbors (show had different names in the UK and U.S.). Seems to have been a lovely man. For that matter, Nigel Hawthorne too.

I haven’t heard anything negative about Emma Thompson. IIRC even she and Kenneth Brannagh get along now, despite their divorce. Also, what about Hugh Laurie? (Stephen Fry is a different story, he’s more fractious, but that could be part of his mental health issues.)

Never heard Peter Davison (ex-Doctor Who, All Creatures Great and Small, A Very Peculiar Practice, Campion, and most recently costarring in the current West End run of Gypsy) called anything but a lovely man.

And I just thought of Ringo Starr, too. Like Michael Palin, he seems to have largely remained the most likeable, reasonable, non-controversial member of a group of oft-competitive, feuding personalities.

(Why does it not surprise me that most of my nominees are British?)

Note: Kenneth Brannagh shouldn’t be bolded; not a nominee.

Did anyone ever have anything negative about Christopher Reeves?

Maybe not him, but Christopher Reeve was known to be somewhat of an asshole off-set, according to one story.

Damnit! I’m always getting that screwed up w/George Reeves. Curse you, Supermen!

Hmm. That’s disappointing.

Easy mnemonic device: There is only one “s” in Superman. (Christopher Reeve, George Reeves.)

Or that the kids would read them themselves.

I mentioned this phenomenon on Facebook, and one of my FBFs said her toddler gets them, and in fact had received one in the mail that day and had already torn several pages in half.

As for Christopher Reeve, there are posters here who said they knew him, and had nothing good to say about him. One even said that there were people who worked with him who said he deserved what happened to him.

And regarding Christopher Reeve, I heard that after his accident, Robin Williams was paying for much of the care he was receiving, as it was really expensive and Reeve ran through whatever savings he had pretty quickly.
