Celebrity Death Pool 2014

Have any of those late-reported deaths actually gained points for anyone? Have they affected the rankings?

Seems awfully anticlimactic.

I don’t know if anyone remembers reading this in the OP but here goes:

One new thing, starting this year for 2014, is that while all deaths garnering points must occur during the calendar year, I know that a death might go unreported for a day or so. So, I will not total points for 24 hours after 12/31/2014. If you find that one of your picks died, say, late on 12/31/2014, and you didn’t hear about it until Jan. 1, 2015(this is a not so subtle hint to check your lists)then post a cite by midnight, Jan. 1, 2015, and you will get your points. After that you will be out of luck.

I figure that if a chosen celebrity dies and nobody notices, they weren’t so important after all. So in the final week of the year I’d suggest players go over their lists to be sure their selections haven’t died.

Now, on a different note, the tension is mounting as we wait for the opening kickoff award!

So Baker, are you resigning as Death Mistress, and are appointing all players co-Death Mister/Mistress? Either run the game or don’t, but pick 1 and don’t half-ass it.

No, I’m not resigning as DeathMistress. What I’m saying is that there is a great deal of work involved in running this thread, with 848 different celebrities selected. That’s a lot to keep track of.

Please don’t insult me by implying I’m doing a “half-assed” job.

Sorry you felt insulted. My point was you WANTED to run the game, and now it seems you are farming out a large part of the responsibility.

Sheesh, etv78, it’s not too much to ask that you keep track of the 13 celebs on your own damn list, and report it if any of them kick the bucket.

Good grief, lighten up Francis.

I’m SUUUURRREEE she has access to 123,425,695 different newspapers, feeds, stations, etc around the globe and can INSTANTLY know if a “celebrity” (given our fairly loose definition of such) on someone’s list has given up the ghost…and given that she’s giving up her BIRTHDAY every year, I think we might be able to cut her some slack on 12/31…She felt insulted because YOU INSULTED HER, jackass…

From Wikipedia:

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira (25 January 1942 – 5 January 2014) was a Mozambican-born Portuguese football forward. He is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. During his professional career, he scored 733 goals in 745 matches.

In the quarterfinals of the 1966 World Cup Portugal played North Korea, who had defeated and eliminated Italy in the group stage. After trailing 0–3 in the 25th, Eusébio proceeded to score four consecutive goals, two before half time and two in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. His last goal in that match came from a penalty when two North Korean players tackled him after a fast run Eusébio had made from the middle of the Portuguese half to the opposition’s penalty area. Portugal came back to win 5–3.

It’s not my forum. But I follow this regularly.

People, calm down. Baker is doing a great job of running this game, but relies on you to help out with the sourcing and deaths. Nothing wrong with that.

Please stop with the jabs. This is a treasured (?) part of the SDMB.

So stop now. Get back to the fun game-playing.

I’ve always been under the impression that we were responsible for keeping track of our picks.

Wouldn’t that be a violation of rule 8?

As somebody who ran the game in the past, I can tell you it’s more work then it seems like. The very least the players can do is post their lists in the proper format and keep track of their own picks and post if they die. And not give Baker any grief over the work she’s doing for all the rest of us for free.

Amen. You are doing a great job, Baker, and I hope you won’t take any hasty nasty comments to heart. We Need You!

Thank you, Baker!

I am not even in the game. I have no issues with people keeping track of their own folks, though I do think the should be a few day cushion (esp with the limited news on Jan 1)

But again I am not even a player.

Brian

many applause for the DeathMistress

Many thanks to Baker for running this game, and I can imagine it’s a fair amount of work. She’s not half-assing anything, based on the (misplaced) complaint.

Folks, I truly appreciate the kind words you are giving me, but I don’t want a fun thread about death hijacked!

Let’s all get back to keeping a sharp eye out for the Opening Kickoff. Last year was no problem, January1st!

While I agree that everyone is responsible for monitoring their own lists, and that that’s how it should be, there’s the problem that sometimes it takes a few days for a death to make the news.

I can keep an eye on the appropriate places all I want, and Google all the names on my list one last time on New Year’s Day, but if there’s a death on 12/31 that isn’t reported in any news source until January 3, all the diligence in the world won’t fix that.
