I’m on the board!
Finally!
In November!
Crap
One other player besides carnivorousplant had Brown,** Fear Itself**.
You managed to carpe Diem?
Yes! Back into the top ten!
Baker, I have a question about this rule:
As mentioned here,
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=16893014&postcount=21
the intent was to prevent the picking of hostages. Is that how you would interpret this rule?
Whoa, I’d kind of forgotten about this issue. As I’ve said before regarding picking only legal adults, we’re sick, but not that sick.
Googling celebrity/cancer is sick, but searching for the names of kidnapees like those who have been beheaded is beyond sick. So, I’m going to say that those will not be counted. I will also try to keep tabs on that kind of news, and if anyone have help to add in that regard, I’d sure appreciate it.
If you have more questions, please ask. I may have to completely rewrite that rule.
Maybe “political prisoners” can be replaced with “hostages”.
Yes! Back too above zero!
That’s a good idea, I’ll go with that if we all seem to agree.
Sounds good to me.
TMZ is reporting that Greg A, Larson has died at age 77 from esophageal cancer.
He created some notable TV Shows like Magnum P.I., Quincy and Knight Rider. He also was a part of the Six Million Dollar Man, BJ and the Bear, Battlestar Galactica, The Fall Guy and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
What a coincidence, Glen A. Larson has died also.
That is what I get for not copying and pasting. :smack:
Thanks.
How do you distinguish hostages of war or terrorist actions from, say, a celebrity held for ransom who dies of fright in the process?
Well, I’d address that if and when it comes. The possibility is pretty remote, while hostages held under threat of beheading is not.
Would it help to exclude hostages whose captivity began prior to entries closing? Say someone chooses a war correspondent who isn’t a captive at the time entries are open, and she gets grabbed by terrorists in April, beheaded in November… Is that the sort of case you want to avoid giving points to, or is it specifically that you don’t want people researching hostages? Restricting the selection of hostages whose captivity began prior to 11:59pm 31 December would stop a chance celebrity snatch and murder mid year from being disqualified.
We don’t want to encourage bad behavior…
Rule 8! Rule 8!
There’s no need to differentiate; any captive could be considered an invalid pick.
Baker is in charge; she makes the rules.
My suggestion would be to exclude anyone who is being held captive as of midnight December 31. Anyone taken captive after that would be a valid pick.
What do you think, Baker?
How can we already be talking about next year’s rules? None of my people from this year have died yet!
I agree with this. If they’re in captivity for whatever reason as this year ends, they shouldn’t be fair game. Doesn’t matter if they’re in the slammer for normal crimes, or held as a political prisoner by a repressive regime, held for ransom by a criminal, held captive/hostage by a non-state group, or whatever.
IMHO, to be a fair pick, as 2014 ends, they’ve got to have their freedom to the extent that their health allows. (So if they’re on their deathbed in a nursing home, hooked up to machines, the ‘to the extent that their health allows’ part kicks in. They’d be fair game.)
If their status changes once 2015 begins, they shouldn’t go from a legit pick to out of bounds.
