It may have just been personal differences between the two of them but about ten years ago when Shirley Manson of Garbage kept a weblog, she got loose on Aguilera and blasted her for–among other things–being an arrogant two-faced prima donna and called her some words that are not used in polite conversation. As might be expected, the entry was removed a few days after being posted and replaced with a short entry that was written by Manson in attorney-speak. In any case, not that I care about Aguilera or her reputation (which I don’t) but your entry seems to be fairly old news in the music world.
My favorite is director John Frankenheimer’s remark that he wouldn’t cast Val Kilmer if he were directing The Val Kilmer Story.
Mark Wahlberg?
If he assaults, harrasses, and throws racial slurs at his fellow Hollywood actors as he has done to random Asian passersby, black children, gay people, etc, I’m not too sure he’d be all that popular. I do hear that he’s dissed anyone from David Beckham to Kate Moss - meow. Makes you wonder if all the verbal diahrrea or douchebaggery has started some bad blood with others because he seems like a floater that just won’t flush.
That’s why she’ll be on that spaceship headed towards the sun.
I’ve also read a lot about Groucho Marx not being especially liked. But the catch was it always seems that his brother Harpo was universally loved. So I can’t really decide if it was Groucho wasn’t liked or that compared to his brother Harpo he was just liked a lot less
OJ Simpson?
Ashley Judd doesn’t get much love – Jason Patric recently called her “lazy, selfish, and arrogant,” and, having heard some recent radio interviews of her pimping her new book, I’ll certainly buy the “arrogant” part.
I’ll go out on a limb here and guess Christopher Reeve, his co-star in Switching Channels.
Her husband, Dario Franchitti of the IndyCar series, is pretty respected and liked. He is one of the few drivers with an appreciation for the history and will tell you how much he admires his fellow Scot Jim Clark, who died over 40 years ago. Yup, Franchitti is Scottish. Brogue and everythingCurt Cavin, motorsports writer for the “Indianapolis Star”, once described her as “inconspicuous for a Hollywood Star. You can talk to Dario and all of a sudden notice that Ashley has joined him. But she wouldn’t interrupt until you have finished talking to Dario”.
She did have a memorably loopy TV appearance a few years ago when Dario won the championship on the last race “oh my darling little husband, out there racing by himself with the big boys from the Penske and Ganassi teams. I’m so happy. But I must get on my soapbox and tell them to get the 23 car off the track. It is not safe with her out there. People will get hurt,” By the 23 car, she meant Milka Duno, a women with little talent but had sponsorship from Hugo Chavez. A lot of people thought it was in poor taste to do that then. Even if they didn’t like Duno. Actually people like Duno, she always has time for signing autographs or posing for photos. But her driving ability is sorely lacking.
Then when Dario tried NASCAR for a year, Ashley showed up on pit road wearing a dress. Wrong. Violation of safety rules. You need protection against the hot exhaust gases and parts out there.
Ashley is a big fan of the University of Kentucky college basketball team (she went to college there) and by pure coincidence Kentucky is often accused of being arrogant, a legacy of long time coach Adolph Rupp. Ashley once complained about how mean and unfair national broadcasters were to her Wildcats. But fear not. Ashley got an internet radio broadcast of the Kentucky radio announcers and sync it to a DVR of a game. No nasty bias there.
I don’t know how many people agree with him, but Walter Matthau detested his “Hello Dolly” co-star Barbra Streisand. Among other quotes, the one I always remember is “I have more talent in one fart than you have in your whole body”. But somehow I think not many people go that far although Babs strikes me as a control freak with a high opinion of herself. But she has a long career so maybe her high regard for herself is justified.
I think his wives and children had more problems with him. He may have been okay with his fellow comedians and the writers he admired like the Algonquin Round Table crowd and T S Eliot “I wanted to talk about Murder in the Cathedral. He wanted to talk about Duck Soup”. But as his son Arthur said, Groucho hid behind a mask of jokes and cigar smoke.
Ditto Dane Cook, though judging by his material I don’t know who would care.
I’m pretty much convinced that Chevy Chase is a homophobe and a general A-hole.
There’s a great book on SNL that came out a few years ago. It’s very thick and told completely from the POV of the people who were on the show or behind the scenes. Great read, forget the exact name, but if you know what I’m talking about I recommend it. Anyways, Bill stated in that book that he challenged Chevy for the cast. It was his first time back as a host, the cast were already pissed that he bolted from the show after the first season and he was being a dick all week long. Bill decided as the new guy to stick up for his colleagues and the rest is history.
Also stated in that book numerous times is that whenever Chevy hosted SNL he was an abusive A-hole to everybody except his good pal Lorne and his favourite form of abuse was gay jokes. When an actual gay cast member joined the show, name escapes right now, he was VERY harsh towards him and I think had him in tears at times. The only cast member that seemed to avoid his “wrath” was Will Ferrell who “sat at his knee” like a star struck young kid who wanted to learn from the master.
He was sued for “outing” (don’t know if it’s even true) Cary Grant on a talk show. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it’s none of his business to out a legend in his twilight years. Totally classless.
Lastly, around the time I read the SNL book, I was listening to an old Howard Stern show and some guest had connections with Chevy who was shooting Fletch II at the time. The guest was able to get Chevy on the phone during a break and most of the interview was hijacked by Chevy’s constant homophobic humour, most of the attacks directed at the guest who was supposed to be a friend or something. I forget.
As for Steve Martin, I think he’s just aloof and doesn’t like to be bothered during his free time. He’s a show your appreciation by buying my work kind of artist, I think. He’s notorious for handing out business cards to people who ask for autographs. It has his autograph on the back and the front certifies you met Steve and thought he was a funny and great guy or something like that. I laughed when I first read the inscription. Bill Murray certainly had nothing but nice things to say about him during a recent interview on Howard Stern.
My dad had a close encounter with Steve Martin in Las Vegas. His colleagues spotted him with Eric Idol in the VIP area. When they left, they walked past his table and he said Steve Martin, who noticed them looking at them, gave the table a kind of “don’t bother us” sneer as he walked by. LOL.
I got the same vibe when I walked past Kevin Costner on a sidewalk once. He didn’t sneer, but he had a serious don’t bother me vibe going on. So I left him alone. I think that sometimes we expect too much of celebrities. Promotional events, movie openings etc. is the time to ask for autographs, shake hands, ask questions etc. IMO. Otherwise, leave 'em alone.
Especially if you see Chevy…
Duno was a menace, and was dangerous to the rest of the field - IndyCar black flagged her for two races, and considered kicking her out entirely last season. She’s nowhere to be seen this year, thank Og.
And, yeah, Ashley Judd does come off as a prissy snob.
Here is Steve Martin’s card that he hands out. I’m surprised more people don’t do this.
Cool! I’m going to print that and put it in my scrapbook.
Wasn’t it Diana Ross or someone like that whose entourage commanded that hotel staff turn to face the wall or otherwise avert their eyes whenever the diva passed by?
Don’t know about that, but I understand one venue had to repaint their primary dressing room because Ms. Ross demanded “earth tones”.
Good nominees here.
Howard Stern has pissed off more that a few people.
Wasn’t Crispin Glover blacklisted for being freaking insane?
Sean Penn can apparently be a difficult person to work with.
As per the OP, isn’t Kathy Griffin’s whole schtick about being not well liked? meybe the whole not being invited onto talk shows is a ruse, I have seen her a few times.
I am surprised I haven’t seen Gary Busey mentioned yet. I’ve heard his name come up in other “who is the biggest jerk in show business” conversations.
