Celine Dion: Your 15 minutes of fame was over 10 years ago!

Are my fiancee and I the only ones on the planet who think Celine Dion has read too many press clippings about herself and actually belives she is a great singer?

I’m not just talking about the 2010 Grammys, either.

Look, it’s not my favorite genre by any means, but in fact, she is a great singer.

Bricker is right. You can’t deny her singing ability.
But she’s one of those people like Barbra Streisand who doesn’t have many fans among the 18-34 set, and hasn’t had a bonafide hit in years, but still manages to cash in on the monster hits she did have during her heyday. A ticket to see her in Vegas would easily run upwards of $100, and people eagerly paid it.

Psst…I’m way over 34, and I still don’t like her.

Streisand I get. Dion, I don’t.

Rather than comparing her to Streisend, I would compare her more to Wayne Newton - the other Vegas headliner fixture. Her singing ability is quite good. Her shows are extraordinary and her fans are legion. I expect her to open up a theater in Branson in the not too distant future.

This is probably going to get me into a lot of trouble, but Dion has about as much talent as Thomas Kinkade. They both (probably) have some talent, but it’s so watered down to be palatable to the masses that I find them to be insipid and boring. Just MHO.

“15 minutes of fame” refers to people who gain a huge amount of attention for a silly or spurious reason. And “Your 15 minutes is up” refers to people who remain in the public eye long after there’s any reason for paying attention.

The Octomom, or Kato Kaelin, or Joe the Plumber… those are people of who you can reasonably ask, “Why are they still famous? Aren’t their 15 minutes up yet?”

But it hardly applies to someone in ANY field who’s been extremely successful and prominent for a long period of time. NOBODY has to ask why Celine Dion is famous- she’s famous because she’s sold tens of millions of recordings, and fills up concert halls wherever she goes! And she’ll remain famous as long as there are millions of people buying her records and attending her concerts.

I don’t even like her, and I can see what makes her a star.

Yeah, but she did it all in 15 minutes!

I don’t care for her act (and I’m certainly older than 30), but she clearly is popular and not just a one-shot wonder. Having her on the Grammies probably was a much bigger draw than many other acts there.

I wouldn’t say I’m a fan, but I’m 28 and male, and think she’s got an amazing voice. The idea of saying she has no natural talent is pretty bemusing.

Talent isn’t everything. She’s got more than her fair share but all the talent in the world can’t make up for her stunning lack of taste. Sadly, a common affliction amongst the modern day divas.

Yeah I wouldn’t compare Dion to Streisand, Barbra earned her right through Broadway and Films to live on her laurels so to speak.

You can’t deny the woman can belt out a tune but so can a lot of others. I think she gets a bit more press because she’s Canadian and she’s French (well in a way sort of) so that gives her bigger appeal than she normally would have if she was a plain old American.

When people mention a Canadian singer or French singer they think of her. And yes I know she’s not French, but she’s close enough
