Chalazae-bones: a visit inside Slug's mind

Re today’s Classic column :

What on God’s green earth is going on in the illustration? Is the guy trying to boil eggs outside of their shells or something? Am I missing something obvious?
RR

No, not too obvious, this one makes little if any sense to me too. Cooking eggs with boiling water in an ice cube tray? Ok…

Not to mention the bugs crawling all over the guy.

And the hair. Yeesh.

A visit inside Slug’s mind? That’s a trip I NEVER want to take! shudder

Cecil Adams is beloved, but not Slug. < shudder >

Then again, some of us are still trying to comprehend the entire Chalazae thing outright… I have never seen or heard of these before.

You never broke an egg and saw a squiggle? Hard to believe.

As to Slug…ug!

My guess is that the egg-squiggle column was originally piggy-backed with the Which freezes faster, hot water or cold water? column, and the illustration was meant to kill two birds with one stone.

Maybe the pic was originally paired with a multi-topic column (something about bugs being one of the other subjects covered, perhaps).

Or maybe Slug’s been into the jimson weed again.

Read the first sentance of the reply to explain the bugs. As for the ice cube tray, I got nothin’.

I am all over that icecube tray in my post above.

I’m not one to throw stones at genius such as Slug Signorino’s. Just like when I see some of Dali’s stuff, all I can say is, " I didn’t catch what Slug was pitchin’." Was it a wild pitch or a passed ball? Someday, maybe the Great Official Scorer will tell us.

My thought was that the response was fairly short, there may have been another question/response that same week (dealing with bugs crawling on people, perhaps)… however, I was unable to locate anything by searching the Archives.

The closest I came was: What’s up with people who think they’re infested with bugs? … but that’s about 25 years later. Whatever Slug may be, he’s not that pre-cognizant.

Then you might also not want to dwell too long on the fact that Slug’s credits also include the illustration of children’s books.

So, I totally understand a guy wearing a bow-tie poaching eggs in an ice-cube tray with bugs crawling all over his face, but what’s up with his eye-brows.
