Living in the DC area, Chandra Levy is both national and local news. (Sean Hannity discussed her for an hour, then WMAL’s Chris Core talked another 3 hours about her.)
And my basic feeling is: except for being murdered, she was a junior-rate Monica Lewinsky.
She was only in DC for a few months, and was already screwing a married politician.
She was a “poor” intern, yet was living in a very pricey neighborhood of DC, two blocks from Dupont Circle.
Her disappearance in DC had been in the headlines all summer until 9/11/01. Nevermind the several dozen other nameless people that had been murdered and/or disappeared in DC in the months since 5/2001.
Maybe her posthumous fame would be tolerable if she were somewhat cute (re: Jon Bonet). But gawd was she fugly!
Yes, I’m sorry the woman was most probably murdered. But the way the press is treating it (thanks to the bucks of her parents) she was on her way to sainthood.
Thanks to the press on the case, dozens of police cadets are combing the crime scene for clues. Gee, if only any other of the hundreds of murders in DC got this type of attention, the police caseload would be cleared in no time.
I think that Chandra was (in the words of my mom) a “nit”. A silly nitwit of a girl that seriously thought she could break up the marriage of a much-older congressman. Silly, silly, and somewhat selfish.
But that being said, she was so young, undoubtedly had a lot going for her, was attractive in her own way, had a family that adored her, and it is damned sad that she came to this end. She would have outgrown her “nit” phase (I would hope) in time.

Who cares what these women looked like? They were murdered and that’s fucked up. If you two are so thick as to not realize why people are taking offense to you two, then I’m sure what I say next won’t faze you at all.

I think that this is such a big story because half of the media are trying to make 2+2=19 because they see parallels and the other half are just basically along for a ride. Yes, Gary Condit had an illicit affair. Yes, he doesn’t interview well. Since when did this imply that Gary Condit committed/arranged murder? That seems to be the implication all along.
No, she wasn’t standard attractive. But, she was a young girl that wasn’t unreasonable looking who stroked the ego of a much older politican. For most power-seeking older men, this is like crack cocaine irresistable. Yes, she was naive. But it doesn’t lessen at all from the fact that a 21 year old girl (who was on track for a good future – political intern spots IIRC are difficult and competitive to get) was (perhaps) brutally murdered in a public park near her home. The fact that this story is 2 days of top headline news is of course somewhat ludicrous – it only revolves around the fact that she was involved with a older, somewhat slimy Democrat who seeked to cover up the affair. But this does not diminish from the horror of what happened.
I just think it’d be real funny if it turns out Gary Condit didn’t kill Chandra Levy, simply because it would make all the folks who are assuming that he did look really stupid.
And IMO, Chandra could have used a bit of a nose job; aside from that, she was rather attractive.
