My current favorite show is Modern Family. Hate may be too strong a word but I find Gloria grating. It’s the accent. It was amusing for a while but I don’t find her hot enough to make up for it anymore.
Also like Parks And Rec. I sort of hate Tom. Let’s say a little Tom goes a long way. I like Andy but they take his character too far into buffoon territory. A few more episodes of this and I may start to hate him. Raising Hope…a teeny-tiny dab of Maw Maw goes a long, long way!
Going back a few years to Seinfeld, I truly did hate Kramer. Just annoyed the livin’ shit outta me.
I’ll second Deb on Dexter and Herbert on Family Guy
I never liked Troi much when the show was being produced, but watching reruns in the last year or so, I have been consistently impressed by her hotness in a way I never was when I was young–at least when she was wearing the blue dress or the proper uniform. I always hated the catsuit; it was not flattering.
See, I would have MUCH rather seen Andrea get eaten than Lori. Not saying I liked Lori, but to me she was much less of an annoying character than Andrea.
…it looks she’ll continue to fuck things up from beyond the grave.
That sequence was some of best TV in history.
He was too American. His character could’ve been more interesting if his family was actually from China instead of South Carolina. Of from some Chinese themed colony planet. If the Scots can get their own colony the Chinese sure as hell can.
Hated Thirteen on House. Hated the fact that so many storylines centered around her and her stupid disease. I was hoping they’d kill her off.
I liked Taub okay until he got babies. Then he got boring. Ditto Cuddy (who I loved as a character until she became Mommy and hooked up with House. They never should have done either of those things, IMO).
Never liked Ray “Super Ray” Langston on CSI. I like Laurence Fishburne, but the character was annoying. He went from Jr. CSI to practically running the department in like one season. Yeah, I get that he was an MD. But he literally was the lowest grade of CSI when he started, and he had all the answers.
As one reviewer once put it: “Voyager, the series where potential goes to die.”
Oh, and…yeah, a “ditto” for Linda Belcher. Just a nothing character for me. Odd, cause it’s usually the troublemaking kids in these kinds of shows that are the annoying ones for me, but Louise is actually one of my favorites. She’s very much an active character, if mischevious, not just a hateful self-absorbed idiot with poor impulse control. Like so many others.
Aaaaand for a more obscure one: Ai Tanabe from the anime Planetes. (With the caveat that I’ve only seen the first few episodes of the series) Yeah, I know—and she isn’t a bad character, or even atypical for the medium, and there certainly isn’t a mean bone in her body. And maybe it’s just because I’m a bitter, jaded nihilist. But listening to her prattle half the time was like running a cheese grater up my spine.
I forgot all about Kramer!!! Just looking at him in his baggy old man pants, like a bum sleeping under a bridge, I thought, God, he must smell like old B.O. and unwiped ass!
My take on these characters is that unless we (the audience) don’t hate them then the writers have failed. What gets me is that every now and then some softer and gentler side of one or the other of them is shown, just to relieve the hate for a few moments. Those writers!
One show I feel I must mention is The Good Wife. The only charcter I actually like is Kalinda. The others arouse at least animosity if not outright hate at one time or another. But that aspect is the drawing card to the show. I get the feeling that the writers really don’t like lawyers!
