Chasing Amy: Holden Had a Point

What do you all think happens after the movie ends (hypothetically speaking of course)? Does Holden get back Alyssa, or is the relationship now doomed?
I know Holden appeared to be single in ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’. I like to think they worked things out after reading his comic, forever the optimist

ftg: So it’s OK to lie to your friends? Why did she feel the need to lie about her sexual past at all? If she wanted to discourage him from digging her, she should have told him she was promiscuous with men in the past and now she’s revolted by men and only dates women. What her lie did was make her more appealing to him, and I have a sneaking suspicion that was accidentally on purpose.

Knowed Out, I agree with you-- I think Holden was stupid. IMO, he sincerely believed that his plan would make things all right. If he’d had the slightest amount of sense, he would have realized his suggestion was degrading and horrible.

However, I do find it intensely interesting that Banky went for it. What the hell does that mean about him?

“Finger cuffs” refers to a finger in each hole, from the same hand…at least that’s how I understood it.

You know…handcuffs for your fingers!

I lie to my friends all the time about things that aren’t any of their business. Of course, it also depends on how good of a friend the person is. I’ll tell things to the guy I’ve been friends with since the age of three that I won’t tell to the guy I’ve been friends with since last summer. And at the time of that scene, they’d only known each other, what, a week? Two weeks?

I think she lied because she was trying to keep him at a certain distance, and got stuck with that lie when he slipped in under her radar and she fell in love with him anyway. She should have leveled with him sooner, but maybe she figured out ahead of time how he’d react, and didn’t want to spoil the relationship. At any rate, Holden still had no business going thermo-nuclear on her like that, and the three way was a stupid, stupid, stupid idea. However, judging by the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, it did get Banky to admit that he’s into guys, so maybe it wasn’t a complete waste.

Miller-- why lie when telling the truth would be more effective and would indicate more overall integrity? The lie she told served only to titillate him further, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence either. JMO, YYMV.

I haven’t seen Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back-- Banky’s gay? What? Do I need to see this movie now, having sworn off Kevin Smith for life?

I was given to understand that Smith’s problem with Adams wasn’t necessarily because of her sexual history, but rather that she was more educated, more well-traveled and more sophisticated in general than he was.

At least that’s what Smith says in his “Evening With Kevin Smith” dvd, and I’m sure I’ve also seen that on the View Askew site.

I think Diff T pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Perhaps Alyssa kept the secret as kind of “emergency escape route” in the sense that if she wanted out of the relationship she could “confess” and shock him into breaking up with her thus letting her out and giving her a reason for “rightious indignation”.

One thing that really annoyed me was Alyssa’s reaction. Sure, Holden was stupid- but Alyssa should’ve realized that he was trying (in his own, STUPID way) to keep their relationship going. She overreacted.

Sometimes we’re all idiots. Our friends forgive us this fact.
