ChatGPT Pro via “invites”. Huh?

I’m thinking of getting a subscription to ChatGPT Pro, which offers more advanced LLMs and a higher allocation of token usage compared to the free plan. Of course I could just buy the official subscription, but I’m also seeing a lot of discounted offers on eBay which apparently sell “invites”. According to OpenAI, there are “eligible users” which have the ability to distribute “invites” to other users, giving the latter the Pro plan for given amount of time.

So I suppose the sellers of such “invites” on eBay are such “eligible users” who monetise their invitation links, correct? How would they get them - do they buy them wholesale from OpenAI and then re-sell them retail, or are there, for some reason or another, comped by OpenAI?

And, most importantly to me: Do these invites somehow involve content sharing? In other words, can the inviter see my chats with the LLM or documents I upload to it? Or do I remain in full control of my account, despite someone else inviting it to ChatGPT?

The invites are a thing they send out to some users: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8381046-chatgpt-promotional-subscriptionsfree-trial-invites-faq

They’re probably not supposed to sell them, but who’s checking?

I don’t believe there is any way another user can see your chats unless you explicitly share them (or are part of some enterprise plan that allows special compliance/audit tools).

PS Not sure if this was clear, but ChatGPT Pro is the $200/mo top-tier subscription. There is also a $20/mo ChatGPT Plus, which is still a upgrade from the free plan (e.g. no ads and all features enabled) while being far less expensive. https://chatgpt.com/pricing/
