Cheers - Happy 64th, Freddie Mercury

The man at his best:

I found this article the other day that describes him as a consummate showman who really cared about his music. He was definitely one of the most passionate and creative people in music. We still miss you, Freddie.

Freddie Mercury was on Cheers?

Yes, absolutely. What a loss to music. I’m so sorry I never got to see Queen before Freddie died.

In the “Because I’m compelled” department…while there’s nothing like the original, here’s a really beautiful cover by one of his biggest fans. (Plus a demo of an unreleased tribute song to him).

Absolutely one of the best performers ever, hands down.

We love you Freddie and miss you still.

So strange how the universe works – the last few days I’ve been on a Highlander kick for some reason, watching clips of the first movie on youtube and listening to the Queen soundtrack. I sat and cried over the scene where Connor holds his wife in his arms as she’s dying. And then I discover that it’s Freddie’s birthday.

“Who Wants To Live Forever?” is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. My soul aches every time it ends on that plaintive “Who waits forever anyway?”

RIP Freddie Mercury.

A friend of mine in Berlin dated Freddie Mercury - a couple of years, if I remember correctly - but they didn’t live together. Even after they broke up, years before Freddie died, the Berlin friend had nothing but good things to say about him. Said Freddie was a nice, smart guy who was really low-key. They would usually just hang out at the apartment, listen to music, watch a film or whatever - no big night-life. Only a few friends even knew they were in a relationship - made it easier for both of them to just be private.
No, I never got to meet Freddie Mercury, but it was nice to hear he was not only a great talent, but apparently a decent guy, in real life, as well.

I’ve been a Queen fan for 30 years now. I still miss the man. Cheers, Freddie.

I was at that concert.* Queen was the best part.
Every time I see something about him on t.v., it makes me so sad. He was such a sexy talented guy…and nobody has a voice like Freddie.
I always laugh when people say “Killer Queen” was about Jackie O, or whoever else. It was about Freddie!
*God, I’m old!!!

I liked it when he played apartheid-era South Africa.

I vividly remember the first time I heard the newly-released Bohemian Rhapsody. I was driving around west Los Angeles on my way to a mall, I believe, and the song came on over the radio.

I had to pull over to the side of the road, utterly gobsmacked at the gorgeous, violent, heartwrenching thing. And it still affects me the same way today.

I saw Queen in concert and they were brilliant.

I found once on youtube a home movie of Freddie sitting around an apartment with a friend or two. Nothing happened, just a couple of people chilling and waving at the camera. Your post, DMark, made me remember it. I’ll have to see if I can find it again.

Didn’t Freddie tape an interview or maybe a public service announcement towards the end in which he warned folks about AIDs? Or maybe I dreamed it.

And happy birthday, Freddie. We still miss you.

Freddie was one of my favs! I think his voice is magical. I will never get tired of listening to him.

I miss you Freddie!

Happy Birthday, Freddie.

I miss you still.
