Cheese carving suggestions?

I’m entered in a cheese carving contest next week at the county fair. My GF and I watched it last year and signed up because it looked like fun, and she’s kind of obsessed with cheese.

We get a brick-sized block of cheddar and 30 minutes. Minimal props are allowed. I have limited artistic abilities, insofar as carving goes at least. Any suggestions on something simple I could carve? Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

Moving this cheese to Cafe Society.

Something with a very basic shape? I think carving a box grater would be very tongue-in-cheek and fun.

It’s pretty easy to carve an animal in this pose. Maybe a big ole cheese lion?

That’s a pretty kick-ass contest, you should post pics later.

I like the way you think.

You could carve a giant elbow macaroni, dub it “macaroni of cheese”

A cheese Sphinx would be even cooler.

Yesterday I was saying “truck, chruck” today I’m muttering about a cheese sphinx, my coworkers are liable to commit me.
Cheese Sphinx so fun to say!

Try looking up soap carving patterns, they start with the same basic shape as your hunk o’ cheddar.

The man in the moon.

Carve it a little hat and stick a feather in it.

In case anyone is interested here are the photos from this event. I ended up carving a big macaroni with cap and feather. The cap and feather came out decent, but my macaroni came out a bit deformed.

I took home 2nd place for “Most Realistic” for some reason. I felt I should have been in the “Most Patriotic” category.
