The wife and I started watching her a couple of months ago. The only tv program we enjoy watching together. Its like a comedy jam session that never gets tiring.
But we are both a little uncomfortable with the role that Chuy plays in the show. I think its offensive to stature challenged people particularly and Mexicans at times. Are the wife and I pretty well alone in this view ?
The jokes are made on a presumption that the things said are not okay to say. And not just “not okay in certain company” but “not okay, period.” The jokes are funny precisely because they appear to make Handler–who’s persona is “smart and sassy”–appear to have a bit of the unthinking buffoon in her. We’re not supposed to be laughing at her with Chuy, we’re supposed to be laughing with Chuy at the world that would produce such idiotic attitudes.
On that basis, I’d say the jokes are fine and shouldn’t be taken as offensive–so long as the show isn’t in some way normalizing the attitude. I don’t think it is–but this is hard to argue about.
