Cherries causing coughs?

Bing cherries are in season and I just downed a bowl full of them. Everytime I eat cherries, the first one I eat induces a tingling feeling in my throat followed by spasmic coughing. After that, I can eat cherries all day long with no further problems (well, other than the anti-constipating effects that cherries can cause :stuck_out_tongue: ). It seems rather ironic that a food that has been long been used to treat coughs would induce them in me.

If this were an allergic reaction, then why would it abate with further consumption of the antigen?

Does anyone else experience this?
