I wasn’t sure how to put this up without it looking like spam. Believe me it’s not (I haven’t been on the board for over a year just to put spam up), I just wanted to share a fun idea with people. So please excuse the appearance, but I wasn’t sure how else to do it.
I’ve been attending a Pub Quiz out in Elmhurst for about 5 months now and in discussing on how to bring in more people (we average about 40) for competition, I thought what better competition than fans of the Straight Dope! What Doper doesn’t like booze and trivia?!
What is a Pub Quiz? Patterned after the Pub Quizzes in Ireland and England, it’s 7 rounds of 10 questions about everything from TV trivia to geography to history to music and just about anything else you can think of. Each player pays only $5 to play and teams of up to 4 people compete against other teams each week. The top three scoring teams win prizes (1st being most coveted and financially rewarding of course).
It is a ton of fun and something my friends and I look forward to each week. If you are in the area and are into this kind of thing, check it out, I guarantee you’ll have fun. Here is the info-
[ul]
[li]Place: McNally’s Irish Pub 122 S York St, Elmhurst, IL[/li][li]When: Every Tuesday[/li][li]Time: 8 p.m. to about 10 p.m.[/li][/ul]
If you have any questions, please ask. My team (named The Weakest Link) is tired of beating the same old people, we are looking for new people to flex our intellectual muscles upon.
I’d have to pass it by the wife of course but I think I might be able to get this to fly.
Of course, my trivia knoeledge is spotty at best. Great in some areas and not so good in others. I might be of dubious use to the team I am on.
I would also be willing to drive people to and fro as long as they are somewhat on my intended travel path (that would be from Bucktown in Chicago on down the Eisenhower to Elmhurst). I could also make a go around up the Kennedy and down 294 if that helped more.

I hear you, I’m the same way. That is what is nice to have a full team. Three other people are a big help in those area lacking.
And don’t feel bad. I ran my OP through the spell checker just as a precaution. I spelled 3 words wrong myself. Just to be clear…there will be booze there right?
And lots of it. In fact (since I’ve never met any dopers as of yet), if you come and introduce yourself, I’ll even buy the first round for you! You can’t miss my team, this week we will be the ones in Pilgrim Hats in honor of Thanksgiving.
Yes, we do dress up on occasion. If you’d like a few pictures, feel free to check out the Pub Quiz Folder here. I would hope that the consumption of alcohol would be quite apparent.
Men with fluorescent orange hair and man-boobs all around…
Sounds like a party to me since you’d have to be drunk to go around in those getups (either that or you are all really weird which is fine by me too…I think).
Should be worth at least one visit just to check things out although this coming Tuesday is out for me (already booked).
In my defense, it WAS Halloween and our whole team went as very, very crude Anne Robinson, our patron saint of Trivia.
Can I tell you how embarrassing it is to walk into Wal-Mart and by a $3 46D Bra? Like I told the lady at the register as she gave me the strangest look (and I quote): “Yes it’s for Halloween, and yes I have better taste than a $3 bra”.
It’s every Tuesday, has been for about 6 months now. That free round from me is for whenever you show up. I thought I’d throw in that so far we’ve one a number of free rounds of drinks, t-shirts, quite a bit of money and a trip to Cancun (it was a special contest). Right now everyone who shows up has a chance to be drawn for another special contest, this one for 4 tickets to the House of Blues for any band the team likes. So not only are their weekly prizes, but other perks as well. However, seeing 4 grown men in bad drag is not what I would consider an extra perk.
And we like to consider ourselves eccentric, not weird.
