I’ve always wanted to do one of those pub trivia contests, largely because I would kick ass at it. (Seriously, I even know the name of the ski-jumper guy from the beginning of Wide World of Sports.) However, my skillz as an arranger of social occasionz are not quite up to snuff, so I’ve been hoping someone else would suggest it someday.
Well, waiting be damned. There’s a place in Newton that does it on Wednesday nights, although if anyone has another place they like, speak up. With the holidays careening towards us, there’s no time like the present. This week maybe, or more likely the 18th. Who’s with me?
I’ll go as far as saying “maybe.” I’m a little intimidated by trying to hang with the likes of Dopers when it comes to anything knowledge-based (and, socially, by being little more than a 9-year lurker here), but I do look for excuses to get out of the house every now and then, and interaction with other human beings might be a good thing.
So I can probably be persuaded. Can’t help much with rallying others to the cause, though. Good luck with that!
I went to the Union Street Grill in Newton tonight, just observing. Looks like fun. Some of the pop culture questions would have slowed me down a bit, but for the most part, I think we’d kick ass.
To whet your appetites, I brought back a question sheet from one of the bonus rounds:
Name the celebrities that inspired the Latin names of each of these animals. (2 pts each)
(At the bottom of the page was a list of ten names, which made it considerably easier. But since I’m doing the legwork here, you don’t get to have them.)
A Colombian tree frog named for a musician and rainforest activist.
An Australian arachnid that uses fangs to crush prey.
A Florida marsh rabbit.
A Costa Rican beetle with well-toned middle femora.
A crustacean found in Zanzibar named after a celebrity born there.
A trilobite with an hourglass figure.
A spider with black markings similar in appearance to a celebrities (sic) moustache.
A louse that is one of many species named for a celebrity noted for his depictions of animals.
A lemur named for a celebrity noted for his love of lemurs.
A turtle named for his celebrity’s fantasy series which were set on a the back of a giant turtle.
I’d like to give the Boston dopers first chance at these, so the rest of you might hold off a bit, or at least spoiler your answers.
So, who’s with me for next week? It starts at 9:00, wrapped up about 11:00. Or if you North Shorevians can find a place in your neighborhood, I’m pretty mobile on a weeknight.
