Chicago Reader IS Department Hiring

After scanning one or two threads on the SDMB where numerous technical people talked about being unemployed / underemployed it occured to me that perhaps I could help in some small way. The Chicago Reader Information Systems department is currently looking to hire one additional technical staff person. We have a couple projects just waiting for staff availability and a general multi-year trend of ever increasing demand for greater process automation along with a need for technological solutions that allow us to provide new features to our client base. In short, we have work and I don’t foresee that changing in the future.

In order to manage expectations a little I’ll be up front with you and state that the Chicago Reader is on the low end when it comes to salary compared to your typical corporate IT position. The Reader however is not a typical corporate place to work and we believe that the relaxed and congenial atmosphere combined with excellent benefits can make up for a workplace with lower salaries. I’d also like to point out that you will not be working on the SDMB since we currently have no unstaffed projects in that area. Instead you would be working on projects that focus on the Reader’s main line of business, newspaper and associated web site publishing.

Since the SDMB is definitely a very saavy, intelligent, and technically-skilled population I think there’s a possibility of an excellent match just waiting to happen. If you are in the Chicagoland area and you’re looking for a full-time technical position then perhaps this copy of a help wanted ad we’ve run for the last two weeks will interest you?

CHALLENGING COMPUTER ENVIRONMENT. The Chicago Reader is looking for an experienced individual to join our Information Systems department working on a wide range of projects and tasks. Skills should include several of the following SQL, MySQL, Access, HTML, PHP, Perl, Delphi, UNIX (FreeBSD, Linux), Windows, NetWare, Help Desk Support, HW/SW Troubleshooting (PC and/ or Mac). A degree in IS/ Computer Science and experience in publishing a plus, but not required. Please reply by Tuesday, August 26th with letter, salary expectations and resume to Jerry Davis via e-mail jdavis@chicagoreader.com, fax at 312-828-0865 or mail to Chicago Reader, 11 East Illinois Street, Chicago, IL 60611.

Thanks,

PS: I’m probably violating all kinds of rules in regards to posting this on the SDMB. I’m not sure what the official policies are. If so, I apologize…and if I have to I’ll lobby to have myself unbanned.

Jerry, you’re way cool.

Hope one of our Dopers gets hired.

I agree, this is way cool. I love this idea. And you’re right, Jerry, this board has a lot of smart Dopers that could handle such a job!

It is cool. And appreciated.

Now just follow up when they need a top flight publishing exec (Ad sales, circulation or top dog) and maybe I can go back to Sweet Home Chicago.
