I prefer the flats, but if I’m picking them out myself I always take a few drummies as well because I think it’s only fair to others. I often buy from my local market’s self serve area and you get to pick what you like. At WalMart you need to ask for what you want.
With the right technique you only get the tip of your index finger and thumb touching the end of the flat and you pull all the meat and skin off in one go. Sorta like eating an artichoke bract.
Wings are considered white meat. I know, they don’t “eat” like what we think of as white meat, but they are white meat in terms of make-up.
Flats are my favorite, but I like drummettes, too. I’m surprised by all the love for flats here, because in my group, it seems like everyone prefers the drums, so, yay, more flats for me! I prefer the flats because they seem to have a better skin-to-meat ratio for me, i.e., the more skin, the better. After all, that’s why I eat wings – for the wonderful skin!
I go with drums. I like flats, but the thing is, I’ve got whimpy fingers. My threshold for toughing hot things is very low. And trying to push that hot meat from between the bones hurts!
I think they are white meat only for portioning purposes. leg/thigh and breast/wing dark/white combo’s, but it terms of the actual meat installed on the chicken from the factory the dark/white line to me seems to be between the drum and the flat.
The trick to eating the flats: pull the cartilage piece off one end. Separate the bones if they aren’t already. Wiggle the small bone until it becomes loose and then it should just pull out smooth. Then you can pull out the big bone. You are left with nothing but deliciousness you can eat like a chicken nugget.
Works better with fried wings than baked ones but almost always works.
I’ve heard this before and even watched youtubes but never got the hang of it. It also gets both hands messy. Instead, I kind of pinch one end of the flat and bite off what I can. Then, put the wing down and rotate over the top as well as end to end. Pinch again and use, um, sort of mouth suction to get what let on that side and middle.
I really need to eat through the food in my freezer and vowed no takeout this weekend but this thread is going to make it difficult. The hot dog chain thread, too.
I just rip them in half. The bigger bone usually retains most of the meat, and the little bone usually comes away with most of the crispiest bit of skin, so I tear them all apart then make a little pile of each half.
