Childhood Commercials

Mission Pak Oranges.

“Say the magic word, say Mission Pak
And it’s on its merry way
No gift so bright, so gay, so right
Give the Mission Pak magic way…”

Yes. You sent a box of Oranges. And outside CA & Fla , like to Wisconsin, they were much appreciated.

“Dont cook tonite- call Chicken Delight!”

This is a local commercial jingle from my childhood.

Pearson Ford, they stand alone at Fairmont and El Cajon.

YES. Best commercial ever. “Madam, how do you dooo?”

This San Diego boy remembers that one well.

The “I Pagliacci” commercial for Rice Krispies is considered the classic, but I prefer this one. (There were at least three versions: this is the jazzed-up one; there was an earlier straight version; and although I don’t remember it, there was a sing-along version which takes all the fun out of deciphering Crackle’s tongue-twisting lines.)

Kerns Bread: one puppet holds up a loaf and says, “everybody likes Kern Bre-ad.” A skinnier puppet replies, “not everybody.” What happens next varies. Sometimes a foot squashes him. Sometimes a hand grabs him. There’s one where the bigger puppet starts talking about violence in commercials. Of course the little guy gets it again. I found out the puppets were made by Jim Henson.

I’m old enough to remember Dinah Shore singing “See the USA in your Chevolet” in this commercial: See the USA in Your Chevrolet Dinah Shore, 1953 - YouTube

And this one for Firestone Tires: 1963 (Circa) Firestone Commercial (Color) - YouTube

And the original ad for Wendy’s that added a slogan to our language: - YouTube

I don’t remember this particular Uniroyal commercial, but I do remember Uni, Roy, and Al.

I do remember the Uniroyal Tiger Paws commercial.

Prell Shampoo. So thick, a pearl barely sinks to the bottom.

And a local one…

Stanley, Stanley, Stanley Chevrolet
Two blocks off the Santa Ana Freeway
1-1-9-8-0 East Firestone
Stanley Chevrolet

If it says Libbys Libbys Libbys
On the label label label
It will be tasty tasty tasty
On the table table table

Also, anyone who grew up in SoCal remembers Worthington Ford.
Here’s Cal Worthington and his dog Spot!
“If you need a better car, go see Cal
For the best deal by far, go see Cal
If you want your payments low
If you want to save some dough
Go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal.”

Of course, for a long time as a child I thought they were saying “Pussy Cow”. Which kind of made sense to me because his Dog Spot was always a weird animal.

Dad: “I found this in your closet. Who taught you how to use this stuff”

Son: “YOU, alright?! I learned it by watching you!”

Narrator: “Parents who do drugs have children who do drugs.”

Operation.

“Take out wrenched ankle.”
[she carefully removes it without triggering the buzzer]
“HA … HA … HA.”

Actually, that applies to pretty much the entire West Coast. Worthington had a dealership in the Seattle area so we got the commercials too.

Here’s the first commercial in Nestle’s “Land of Chocolate” campaign from the late 60s. I seem to remember the proprietor of the chocolate house getting more peeved at the kids eating pieces of it as the ad series went on.

Son of a…! Two-day-old thread, and I get ninja’d by an hour!

Forever etched in our memories. That man was the Vin Scully of selling cars.

I dare ya to knock this battery off
“Huungry! Hungy Jack!”

Even before the “Go see Cal” jingle, there was:

Worthington Ford in Long Beach
Worthington Ford in Long Beach
San Diego Freeway
At Bellflower Boulevard.

“They’re GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!”

Thurl Ravenscroft “rapping” a radio commercial circa 1960 for a Chicago car dealer on track 20 here: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/07/365-days-184---.html

I must’ve heard that on the radio hundreds of times.

LOL, I remember so many of these! Speaking of memorable Wendy’s commercials, though…

Swimwear!!

That instantly makes me think of a magazine ad version, featuring figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi in all her leggy glory.

Dayum.

See post 19

Yes, I still quote this aloud quite often. “EES NEXT…”

One more old memory. I wonder how many of us (over 55 or so) can still sing the Chef Boy-ar-dee Beefaroni song?

veddy niiice.
