I express no opinion on the muumuu issue. I have already made clear my thought that gloworm’s actions were highly inappropriate and deserving of criticism.
That said… I absolutely reject the idea that posters here should be judged by age. Dismissing anyone’s position with, “You’re just a kid and don’t know any better,” is, obviously, an ad hominem attack.
Undoubtedly harsh language appears on these pages. But people of all ages may read it. I rather suspect that people of all ages may encounter it in school. I am not persuaded that reading it here is particularly damaging.
Crick - you are absolutely right, of course, when you suggest that children don’t have civil rights in the same way that adults do. I am not suggesting that this poster’s ‘rights’ should drive our approach. When ideas are subjected to adversarial testing, they either fail or stand or their strength. No proposition, dismissed because of the age of the posting it, can fairly be tested. So it’s not for the kids’ rights that I speak, but rather for this board’s presumed commitment to discovering the truth, and to stamping out ignorance.
In short, we fail in our own mission when we blithely dismiss a point because of the age of the poster thereof.

I have to agree with Mrunner in his point that a lot of people here are uptight and tend to gang up on others. I think the “mob mentality” has driven a number of posters away (who probably deserved better treatment).
One of the things that appeals to me about his board is that it’s visited by people of all ages, races, experiences, education levels and backgrounds. Isn’t getting people like this in one spot the way to stamp out ignorance?
Mrunner, I hope you’ll stay and do as I do - recognize the idiots and assure yourself you’ll never turn out like them!

I have no reason to apologise, I disagreed with the op, this is the pit, I flamed him.

I mean he opens a thread like this to defend the actions of a poster who most of us want drawn and quartered, and now I have to be nice because he is a good kid who contributed on other threads? If any other poster had made this OP, I would have said the same thing, my response to the op had nothing to do with age.
Look, I havnt seen him around, and if all you guys say he is witty and articulate, great, wonderful, WELCOME!! but dont flame me if I say it makes me uncomfortable to engage in a flame war with an 8th grader.

I am against censorship, I enjoy the exchange of ideas, all that, I dont think this place should necessarily have an age limit, but how young is too young to read stuff on this board? Especially here in the pit, do we want 10 year olds reading the thread about Demo and Flyp?

Back in the days of the SDMB on AOL, we only chased off the idiots who weren’t there to learn, but just to disrupt the board. Age, race, experiences, backgrounds, etc. weren’t a factor in participation, but instead offered a wide perspective to a large variety of topics.
I think it is sad that this board has deteriorated to the point that a small cliché (you know who you are) are under the impression that some sort of initiation must be passed before a newby is allowed into their tight little group or on the board for that matter.
Run off the dickheads like SECRETAGENT and MarkSerlin, but until someone proves to be a troll IN THE TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD, they are not obligated to run your fucking gauntlet.
I think it has gotten to the point of disgusting the way certain “adults” have turned this site into a junior high school. I am getting tired of e-mails from intelligent lurkers who say that they would post but they don’t “fit in”. I am getting sick of seeing new posters with great potential being run off by the cliché. I am going to be pissed if this latest bullshit drives Mrunner away. I think he has a lot to offer.

Mrunner, I gave one of the snottier responses to your muumuu question. Violating all rules about not cluttering up apologies with excuses, your topic didn’t give any explanation for a highly unusual request and (this is the biggee) it coincided with a lot of stupid misbehavior here on the board.
Turns out you gave an excellent background for your question that cleared up the misconception that you were trolling. But no way around it, I jumped to false conclusion that you were part of the “pest infestation” and I owe you an apology for that.
You’re bright, articulate and age doesn’t matter. FWIW, 2 of the most mature and valued posters here haven’t hit 18 yet. So I hope you stick around, and I’m sorry for the mix-up that caused the less than welcoming greeting I gave you.

I am a full adult, but obviously you think anyone that could defend a ‘kid’s’ rights to think how they want to must be a ‘kid’ herself. Grow up and get your head out of your ass.
