I don’t think he’s a witch hunter because witch hunters are implied to be mortal humans. I’m curious to see where they go with Sabrina. I loved how Madam Satan/Lilith really took her time tormenting the principal before eating him. Some of the writing feels lazy though. Like how quickly Sabrina’s friends (& Harvey in particular) both accept her being a witch and the existence of witches, but it’ll be fun to see how they react if they learn anything about the Church of Night (especially Roz). Also I hope the worldbuilding get’s expanded up. I’m curious to know more about the other covens and witch/warlock history. Hilda and Zelda look like fortysomethings, but are implied to be least 200 yrs old; which would suggest they’re only a generation or 2 removed from the Greendale 13 and the founding/moving to North America of the coven.
No need for spoilers at this point I don’t think -
Well I went to his possibly having something to do with Connor’s death because that death, presumably by a witch hunter, was sort of left hanging after it happened. But on rethink not really. The implication is that Luke had something to do with it, and with killing off Connor’s familiar (the iguana) to eliminate any chance of Ambrose uncovering something.
Does that tie together with the bit at the end of all the warlocks together (no witches) in a circle led by Blackwood? And with Connor’s parents’ death (from “grief”)?
Mr. though is still clearly going to be of significance …
My favourite Episode was the “Feast of Feasts” - really nice discussion about faith. I am only a bit annoyed that Sabrina was right, though. But they went through with the feast anyway and didn’t abandon it. Which leads to one of my concerns - what are we supposed to take away from these witches, especially Zelda? According to what she said, she was happy cannibalizing other witches for a few hundred years, and Sabrina is ok with that because she would not have eaten her?
I have a hard time not sympathizing with Witch Hunters based on the general Outlook on life these guys have. Which makes it really jarring that Sabrinas friends are all like “Aww, poor Sabrina, she so finally told us that she is a demon-worshipping cannibalistic witch who curse Generations of women with blindness, lets hug her…”
So, some interesting choices there, I look Forward to the Special.
Yep, that is a major flaw with all media trying to make ancient serial killers into the sympathetic characters. Of course people should be hunting down and exterminating witches like those in Sabrina–they are evil, blood-soaked monsters! Same goes for vampires where all is supposed to be forgiven when they no longer kill people now but have racked up a body count in the thousands in the past.
Well usually in fiction when the supernatural beings are the protagonists the mortals who hunt them tend to be extremists blindly devoted to destroying them indiscriminately, regardless of whether a particular individual is evil or not. It remains to be seen how this show is going to portray them. Also none of Sabrina’s friends know about the Devil worship or cannibalism* yet.
And to be fair we haven’t seen any suggestion that the Spellmans actually murder mortals to eat like Madam Satan; outside of the Feast of Feasts (or dreams) they seem content to “merely” cannibalize already dead bodies delivered to the mortuary. Which may still be disgusting & wrong, but it’s technically not even cannibalism since witches & warlocks appear to be a different species from mortal humans (or at least it’s how they view themselves).
I get what where you’re coming from, but Sabrina herself casually kills one of the Weird Sisters under the assumption that she can bring her back with the Caine pit. These people are messed up. My intention was basically that I really understand where the witch hunters are coming from in this world. And as all the witches are devoted to the devil in this series, well, destroying them indiscriminately seems the right choice
As to what the girls are aware of - hm, I guess witches as devil worshippers is quite established Knowledge, especially in this Greendale that is Salem Lite with all of their history of witch Trials. But I admit that they may not be aware of how much there is hyperbole. But honestly, I expect at the Minimum a discussion about how to get rid of the blindness curse, cunning benefits or not!
But I agree, let’ meet our first witch hunter before judging. I would actually like them to make them a bit three dimensional as well - as I said, I really liked the discussion with Prudence about her faith. If they do something like that with Witch Hunters as well (and as Harvey Comes from a line of them, I guess it’s inevitable), that could be good.
As to the excommunication Thing, I guess this is another clear indicator the the High Priest and church are really quite irrelevant to Satan - he just cares about the witches signing his book, beyond that its all beneath his notice.
Bright Solstice everyone! I enjoyed the holiday special. Funny how easily most of the Spellmans’ Yule decorations can pass for Christmas decorations. It’s a little weird how quickly Sabrina’s friends are adapting to her being a witch. Even weirder is how open her aunts are being in front of them, I’m pretty sure Hilda praised Satan within ear shot. I loved Sabrina complaining about witches and cannibalism.
I knew nothing about the Christmas/solstice special and found out about it here, so thanks! It was really enjoyable, maybe better than some of the normal season 1 episodes.
It seems Zelda has come to a more realistic plan for Letitia, if she can go through with it. She seems really attached to the baby.
Story still doesn’t make any sense, though. Somehow I enjoy it anyway, but questions about whether or not a witch actually loses her powers if she doesn’t sign, what’s supposed to be so great about being a member of the Church of Night, etc, pull me out of the story somewhat. It could have used a little bit more solid world building, but maybe they didn’t want to solidify the “rules” too early on.
Finished watching it yesterday. Got real dark. And kind of cheesy?
Also,
Did they forget that they had a magical grave plot that revived the dead? Because that could have been useful a few times this season, but wasn’t used.
It is very odd watching this after spending the past six months watching the old Sabrina sitcom with Melissa Joan Hart. My 14 year old LOVED that show all the way to the very end. I think the last two seasons was pretty awful but it had a sweet ending. We started the new Sabrina last night right after the old Sabrina finale and it was just not good at all. Maybe that was our mistake, because I guess we became accustomed to those characters and it was just so weird and off-putting for it to be so different. I knew it was going to be dark, that wasn’t it. To her it was the aunts. She said they were gross and fake. Everyone on the show was kind of gross and fake to me though. I’m not really used to watching the modern teen drama type shows like this so that could be my problem, but the over-acting reminded me of the old soap operas.
I don’t normally watch teen dramas either, but both this one and “Riverdale” (made by the same people, and both set in the Archie universe) have the same weird, old-fashioned, anachronistic melodrama vibe. It’s a stylistic thing. I kind of dig it (though Sabrina isn’t nearly as over the top as Riverdale, despite the latter having no overt magic or supernatural stuff). I basically watch Riverdale now to see just how far off the rails they’re willing to go (it’s a train wreck with pretty people) but I’m still enjoying Sabrina three episodes into season 2.
