It’s neither mundane nor pointless, but here it is.
Friday 15th is Chip in for Christchurch Day, not another donation fest, but just a time to let the residents know we are still thinking of them after their run of earthquakes.
I don’t have any friends or relatives down there, but there are at least a couple of Dopers who’ve been going through thousands of shakes, great and small since September.
And I do think about them often and hope they’re okay.
I called my friends in Christchurch (South New Brighton) just last week.
Their nerves are on end - seems like endless after-shakes, still lots of damage, still businesses closed and some major inconveniences with just trying to drive from point A to point B. They told me they don’t have a single glass left in the house - all plastic cups now, as everything has broken.
They had been thinking of subletting their home and moving to Germany for a year or so, but after the last spate of after-shakes, now their house has too many rips and tears to sublet. Plus, it will take months before anyone can come to fix them - their house is not on the list of “first to be fixed”, so they simply have to wait it out.
They both have their jobs - and the kids and grandkids are OK, so they plod on. Still, I can tell they are weary of all this and the stress it taking a toll.
