“What does it mean when you bite out the eyes and scream ‘Stop Staring at Me!’”

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

But isn’t there a tradition down south of making a cake with plastic baby Jesuses in it? Are all King cakes homemade, then?

I think enforcement is pretty sporadic for something like baked goods. And I’ve seen store bought King cake with the baby Jesus taped to the box. Wink wink, don’t you dare secretly insert it somewhere…

Only the name.

This is the exact total of what we know about Eostre: |Eosturmonath has a name which is now translated “Paschal month”, and which was once called after a goddess of theirs named Eostre , in whose honour feasts were celebrated in that month. Now they designate that Paschal season by her name, calling the joys of the new rite by the time-honoured name of the old observance.[21]|

Nothing else written in the ancient days has been unearthed, other than a worn, short inscription or two. That is the sum total of what we know, one short paragraph. In fact for many centuries , many scholars thought that the Bede had made it up.

Nothing about bunnies, flowers, eggs, nothing- just a name and a month.

King cakes are local to my neck of the woods. Little plastic babies are commonly sold with king cakes but today are almost never placed in the cake by the baker. That started being phased out ~30 years ago.
