You don’t think he. . .nah, forget it.
No, what?
…what horrible news
On June the 15th The Sensational Sherri, WWE hall of famer, former world champion and manager of many of the greats, passed away. She seemed like a classy lady, who deserved all the accolades she recieved.
Shane Bower, known in wrestling circles as “Bif Wellington”, former tag team partner of Chris Benoit where he shared the Stampede title with Benoit, was found dead on June the 24th. He had been dead for a few days, probably due to a heart attack.
Nancy Elizabeth Daus Benoit, also known as the wrestler/manager Woman, was one of my first wrestling crushes. Manager of Doom, former Sullivan Satanist and appearing in all of the major modern federations, she was a beautiful woman and one of my favourites.
Chris Benoit, the Wolverine, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He was a typically Hart trained wrestler, trained in the dungeon, he was like poetry to watch.
From Bam Bam to Guerrero, Crash Holly to Mr Perfect, Miss Eliaabeth to Rick Rude, Mike Awesome to Chris Candido, from Davy Boy to the Von Erics, from John Tenta to Dino Bravo, from Yokozuna to Hawk, from Brian Pillman to Owen Hart-these guys put their bodies on the line day in and day out to put smiles on the faces of their fans and to put food on there families tables. But it is about time the industry started looking after them.
Dorothy Wight, mother to the wrestler known as the Big Show, said it best when she said:
It is way too early to speculate on exactly what happened in the Benoit household over the last three days, but one thing is for certain: the wrestling industry will come under the spotlight, and not before its time. These magnificant entertainers have given me years of enjoyment at the expense of their bodies, their families and thier lives. The industry needs to clean up its act, cut down the workload, get the steroids out of the sport once and for all, and start preparing these guys for life after wrestling. "Cause it hurts everytime we loose one of these guys…
RIP Sherri, Shane, Nancy, Chris and Daniel…
“Death by Pile Driver”
All the information I’ve read has her dying first and then their child.
Last bit of news that I’ve heard from a friend of friend who is in law enforcement in Georgia is that Nancy killed Daniel on Friday, called Chris home saying there was an emergency. When Chris got home and saw what had happened, Chris strangled Nancy with a cord. Some time passed before Chris then hung himself in the garage.
Hearsay at this point but I’d be able to stomach that awful scenario a smidge more than one of my heroes snapping and killing two innocent people out of the blue.
I know nothing about wrestling and never heard of Chris Benoit. Even so, this thread makes me very very sad.
I’ve seen this as a FOAF story on two other wrestling boards (The W and SmartMarks) and don’t believe it at all. Besides, the Atlanta Journal Constitution states he was found in the weight room.

Depends on the person- I would immediately kill myself if my kid were to die.

You may say that you would, but I don’t think there’s any case where somebody actually did that. I’m talking about cases where someone immediately killed themselves on learning of the death of someone close to them where they weren’t responsible for that death themselves. The case that fessie links to is slightly different. It’s a case where someone accidentally shot someone else and shortly afterwards killed themselves. That case seems to me to be somewhat similar to cases where someone has taken hostages and is surrounded by the police, so they kill themselves. Do someone know of any case where all the following are true?:
- Someone close to a person has died.
- The person is not responsible in any way for that death.
- The person then immediately commits suicide.
I’ve never read of any such case. Has anyone heard of such a case?
I’m admittedly a little different, and agree its probably extremely rare.
Actor Charles Boyer killed himself two days after Patricia, his wife of 44 years, died.
There’s still a distinction between that and what WW is talking about.
Boyer’s wife had cancer, and she died. And, I presume, he didn’t think he had anything to live for and killed himself. He knew it was coming. He’d probably planned it.
WW is talking about a scenario like Romeo & Juliet. You come home, find a loved one unexpectedly dead, and overcome with grief, you kill yourself. That’s the scenario he was responding to upthread.
I don’t know if it has happened or not. But, I imagine it’s rare enough that it doesn’t really make a logical conclusion in this Benoit case.
Yeah… now pretty much debunked. From TMZ.com
"TMZ has learned more about the deaths of WWE wrestling superstar Chris Benoit, his wife and son – and the information is extremely disturbing.
Several Atlanta-based law enforcement sources have told TMZ Benoit may have strangled his wife on Saturday, then smothered his son in his bed a day later. Investigators refuse to officially comment, pending final confirmation by the coroner on the cause and time of the deaths.
One source told TMZ that Benoit was texting friends during Sunday’s WWE “Vengeance” Pay-Per-View program – possibly watching the show with his son, who may have been alive at the time.
According to sources, Benoit then hanged himself Monday in a weight room inside the family home.
A police investigation is ongoing."
Robert E. Howard, more or less.
I think suicidal despondency over losing someone to natural causes is still not the same reaction anyone is at all likely to have to finding their family murdered out of the blue. My reaction to coming home to finding my wife and kids muredered would not be “oh well, I guess I’ll kill myself” (though those kinds of feelings might well come later). My overwhelming impulse would be to find whoever did it. I would expect any normal person to at least call 911, not just mope around for a couple of days and them hang himself. I’ve never heard of anyone committing suicide immediately after finding his/her family unexpectedly murdered. That just doesn’t sound plausible to me. The first reaction should be rage, not despondency. Despondency comes later in the grief process. Nobody processes that quickly.
Strangled wife, smothered son then hung himself per CNN. Apparently he wasn’t such a great guy after all. Kind of a dick, actually.
Yeah. . .and that’s why both responses to Wendell’s post have been scenarios where the suicide occurs at the end of a prolonged illness.
Again, rather different from what he was talking about.
If steroids played any role, maybe the WWE should look into banning them?
