I cry out for I am persecuted by the evil atheists, They cast lots for my garments. They taunt me with ridicule. They give me vinegar when I thirst. And now I say… Father… mow 'em down, baby, mow 'em down!

Dude, your garments are so last year. Maybe if I could get better odds from the house…
I suppose that it doesn’t help that none of the Christians in that thread claim to be “persecuted”?
mswas–that’s terrible! Terrible that the Jewish guy was harmed and terrible that those people adhered to their bigotry re Muslims. Bah-I’m with Linus: I love mankind; it’s people I can’t stand. (and it wasn’t Snoopy or Charlie Brown who said that, it was Linus…)

It’s not just here, it’s everywhere. Every message board has its bigots. Liberal multiculturalists think they can’t be bigots, but often they are as bigotted as anyone else.

**Allison (Carol Cane): ** I’m in the midst of doing my thesis.
**Alvy Singer (Woody Allen): ** On what?
**Allison: ** Political commitment in twentieth century literature.
**Alvy Singer: ** You, you, you’re like New York, Jewish, left-wing, liberal, intellectual, Central Park West, Brandeis University, the socialist summer camps and the, the father with the Ben Shahn drawings, right, and the really, y’know, strike-oriented kind of, red diaper, stop me before I make a complete imbecile of myself.
**Allison: ** No, that was wonderful. I love being reduced to a cultural stereotype.
**Alvy Singer: ** Right, I’m a bigot, I know, but for the left.

“I’m nailed up here, dude. Sorry, Dude. But I am fucking nailed up here! Something in the way of a miracle, maybe? Pretty soon would be good. Hello?”
You read the thread that way? How? Why? Autolycus is not saying his Catholic faith “rules”–no one is saying that any of their faiths’ “rule”. What I see are several posters relaying stories about their own struggles with the same issue, and some saying that perhaps this isn’t the best place to mull things over. I honestly don’t see how that equates to “my team rules/your team sucks” Which is “your team”? 2 admitted agnostics (me and someone else-Teleperien?) stated that we have also struggled with this issue and found casual sex to be not our cup of tea. So, the “team” isn’t even Christian.

I think you missed my point. I think the thread is wonderful, and there’s a lot of great insightful opinions from people coming from many perspectives.
It’s just that some “fighting” words managed to creep into a thread where they didn’t belong is all. And I find it sad that in a thread where most everybody is playing nice, we still see accusations about what other people might do to shit on the thread.
It was a case of “even when I’m enjoying this diverse and intelligent group of people at their best and most interesting, I cannot ignore the fact that they often throw hissy fits at each other.” It would have been nice to read a thread free of divisiveness, but when we bring it up pre-emptively then it means there is no hiding anywhere from it.

Well, I know what you’re sayin’, but there is indeed a long history of anti-Christian pileons here, and so it wasn’t an off-the-wall prediction. As to whether or not it was an *accurate *prediction, consider that perhaps the existence of the prediction influenced some people to hold their tongues when they might otherwise have posted.
I can often stop my toddler before she hits by saying, “I know you might feel like hitting!”, and she checks herself. My prediction halts the behavior. I find many adults not unlike toddlers.
[/QUOTE]
That’s a good point. I like to imagine, though, that the difference between adults and toddlers is the capacity to check questionable actions without being explicitly told. Perhaps that’s unrealistic, I don’t know.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress seems to have nothing better to do than vote on resolutions saying Christians are teh awesome!.

They’re going to fund Bush’s war again, but not as much as he originally demanded. If only the Democrats of the SDMB could have the foresight and courage of Congressional Democrats.

Didn’t quite get that from your OP.
I’m afraid that might be a bit naive. I am pleasantly surprised at how moderate that thread has been, but it quite easily could have become a snark fest. Sad, but true. IMO, pre-empting the “hissy fits” by acknowledging their presence was a smart move on Auotlycus’ and other posters’ parts.

Small nitpick.Offering vinegar to the crucified was an act of kindness, not a taunt.A drink of vinegar/water/honey was a common summertime drink for farmhands in the past. The acidity “cut the dust”.
Just so I don’t seem one-sided or anything, here’s a great example of again, a person attempting to start a thread relating to religion, and the OP basically gets called an infectious disease-bearer for admitting to religious belief. Sheesh, I know this is being committed by a usual suspect, but . . . man, maybe that post is deserving of its own thread.

Can’t people just come off it?

Dunno. Maybe because this bb is peopled with smart asses who are used to being the most intelligent ones in any room, and therefore tend to be opinionated and obstreperous? I don’t like that kind of thread-shitting, either. Sometimes I wonder if it’s possible to truly talk about anything in more than just groups of 2–in RL or online…
