I guess this is as good a place as any to mention this. But I see Christians put down (by a few), women put down (directly by a few, indirectly by many), the mentally ill put down, and the elderly put down. Gee, thank God I’m a liberal who lost weight. This place would be no fun at all.
Hoo boy are Christians not used to being top dog in the United States. To think that any Christian would think the treatment they receive on the SDMB is persecution. . . what a thin skin the OP is showing.
There are a few posters here who actively dislike Christians, Der Trihs being a very vocal one. There are many more who don’t believe. Me saying I don’t believe in your God and that the story of your God rising from the dead is silly-- that is NOT persecution. That is me disagreeing with you.
And even our resident Christian hater is NOT persecuting anyone. He may be obnoxious and insulting but in no way is he persecuting ANYONE.
Christians should spend a week being Muslim or black or Mexican or fat for a week in the United States. These commonly dumped on minorities have had it bad forever in this country and even THAT doesn’t rise to the level of persecution.
Oh except, of course, that slavery thing and the lynching thing and the hosing down thing-- thank God I missed that part!
Personally, I think Christians could stand a bit more persecuting. Does 'em good. Builds character.
See? It’s working already.
PS, I thought that was a hilariously appropriate reply, Trisk. I’ve awarded you 10,000 points.[/Drew Carey]
This is the funniest dialog I’ve ever seen on the board.
Surely only the first alternative is a contradictory one there? There are probably fat, black, or Mexican Christians on the board.
Yeup, like me. Only I’m not Mexican–I’m Puerto Rican, fat and black and raised Catholic. I don’t understand why that would be contadictory, though. I’ve lived my whole life so far without anyone saying one derogatory thing about my being raised Catholic (and Catholics are the most reviled of Christians) yet I’ve had to learn to shrug off the shit I get about the fat, black, Hispanic part. Even though believing what must be believed in order to be a Christian is far more worthy of derision than any of the other discriptors I have used for myself in this post.
That seems to be a big problem with this whole thing. When atheists state what they think, Christians have a holy shitfit. They are not used to being challenged in any way at all. Any disagreement turns into persecution. It’s gotten so bad you can’t even say “Happy Holidays” for fear of starting another battle in the War On Christmas.
I think that feeling is changing quite a bit amongst the anti- and non-Christian groups. While the Catholic Church for a long time were responsible for some horrible atrocities, they seem to have come around on things like science and personal freedom.
More and more it’s the southern Protestants (Baptists especially) who are proving to be pretty firmly against scientific and social progress.
And please realize that yes, I know there are millions of Christians who aren’t against gays or evolution, but understand that when I refer to Catholicism and Protestantism on a broad scale I’m speaking of the organization, not the individual members.
I meant that being Christian and Muslim was contradictory. You can be fat, black, or Mexican and a Christian, of course. Or even all four.
That’s true. But it would also be just as hard to try being black if you’re white-- Christian or not. When I said the OP should try being . . . other things, I wasn’t being literal.
There are 3 threads on religion going on right now. All were started by the religious person. No one picks on religion to be mean. It is just because it so easy.
Oh yeah, one yuck-yuck from you wipes out the whole of theology from Okham to Plantinga.
I got that part. I was just meaning to point out that some Christians wouldn’t have to pretend, since they already are those things, and thus quite possibly do understand that kind of persecution anyway.
Quit bragging, o relationshiped one.
This caused me to wonder: where are the Muslim Dopers? There must be some, musn’t there? Out of the several hundreds? Are they reluctant to admit such, given the current climate of dis?
If anyone is likely to suffer persecution, I would think it might be they.
It shouldn’t be the fault of the rest of us if Christians cannot help but be persecuted every time they leave the house. With every crosswise glance, every mention of something not-Christian, every alternative spelling of god, every failure to recognize the greatness of their devotion, they suffer severe persecution.
At the same time, they will spare no opportunity to describe their majority status, point to the language on currency, the roots of major holidays, the invocations at schools and governmental activities…
Such a difficult tightrope to walk. It’s reminiscent to me of the similar cries of conservatives, who also (at least over the past few decades) proclaim their outcast, persecuted status while also taking pains to note their dominance of media and government (which nevertheless somehow continues to be liberal, in their eyes).
Such a tough life, constantly reminding oneself of one’s proper majority status and persecution as an outgroup. No wonder it leads to such cognitive and emotional difficulties.
Remember now, the topic is persecution on the SDMB.
Or, you know, they could try it for a week on the Dope, that being the area under discussion - where most threads that even mention Muslims quickly veer off in the direction of the evils of Christianity, and it’s never anyone’s own fault that they’re fat. The instances of Mexicans and blacks are left as an exercise for the student.
Yes. And?
Or, they could not whine about being persecuted on the Dope, which is what this thread is about. They are not being persecuted here, they are not being persecuted any where in the Western world.
What, no one is supposed to mention the evils of Christianity in relation to Muslims? Ever? Or the persecuted Christians will cry about how unfair it all is? Being fat is less of a choice than crying persecution because other people don’t agree with you.
It would seem that there are those who disagree with you.
