Are these people under the impression that calling contraception “gravely immoral” is likely to bring the public (90+% of whom use or have used contraception) round onto their side?
I miss the N.Y. pizza of my youth. There was so much oil in it, it’d soak through a thick cardboard box, the tablecloth, the table itself and then seep into your shoes. Man, that was greasy pizza. Tasted great though.
More on point, we have *Agvania *(“Tomato”) a local pizza chain owned and run by the Breslevs, a particularly nutty Hassidic sect. Their pizza is actually pretty good, if you like really thin crusts.
You got me. Supposedly, Domino’s changed something about their recipe–was it the crust–a few years back, and they’re supposed to be a bit better, but the last time I ate a Domino’s pizza was maybe 1995. Some people apparently like it. While I think Dominos and Taco Bell are the two absolute worst well-known chains in terms of their product, I like McDonald’s, so who am I to talk? It always puzzles me to see it thriving in places like NY/NJ that have decent pizza that is also affordable.
Sounds great. I’ll pop over next Saturday afternoon and check it out.
Correct, he sold Domino’s to Bain Capital in the 90s for around $1bn. Monaghan is basically a weird Catholic extremist. Apparently he had some “epiphany” in the 90s relating to his Catholicism (he was already extremist Catholic before that) in which he felt a lot of his billionaire lifestyle and lavish behavior was some sort of sinful pride. He sold a lot of his possessions that he identified as being part of that (including the Detroit Tigers, and most of a rare car collection, he also stopped construction on mansion/mega-estate) and then began a crusade in support of Catholic political causes, most especially pro-life causes.
This started to cause some backlash and it’s generally assumed he ended up selling Domino’s because he felt he couldn’t be CEO of a company while doing his crazy Catholic routine. So now he’s basically a billionaire who has made it his full time job to do stuff just like this. If you read about his history since the 1990s it’s all basically pro-life, anti-contraception advocacy with some religious philanthropy thrown in (mostly building Cathedrals in third world countries.)
So for better or worse, this “is his business” now, so to speak.
Where’s Herman Cain and Godfather’s Pizza in all this? Are we not counting teabaggers as Christians?
Sounds great! Don’t forget to order the pepperoni with extra cheese.
Hey, thanks for the suggestion!! I may have them toss a few clams on, too!
I can vouch for this. He gave a talk at my college back in the mid '80s. He was more Catholic than the priests and monks on the faculty.
The best pizzas around here come from the Greek delis. In New York, the Puerto Ricans run them.
I live in NJ. Best pizza in the world. For some reason my girlfriends kids like Dominos. I don’t consider it real pizza but just like Stouffer’s French Bread pizza or Pizza Hut, sometimes I don’t mind it. Especially their thin crust. Very thin and crunchy. And it’s cheap and delivery is fast.
The best pizza places in NorCal are mostly Italian. The cooks are mostly Mexicans. The customers are mostly Asian.
OK, that last one was a little bit of an exaggeration, but this is a really unusual demographic area for mainland USA.
I so wish I could get a good pizza where I live. On the plus side, a reasonable coffee shop just opened up.
Back on topic, I hate religious-message foods.
I don’t know. Hot Cross Buns are pretty damn good!
FWIW, I never liked Domino’s all that much.
I have no reason to assume that Pizza Hut or where ever is any better than Domino’s or Papa John’s. They all suck. The only time I order from any of them is when I get a deal in my motel room.
Pizza is a worldly affair, and a good Christian denies the world, so it should be no surprise they can’t make a good pizza.
I live in NJ and I have no idea how the local franchise stays in business. Even the local ShopRite cafeteria does better pizza than the Dominos. In fact the chicken franchese slice I had a few weeks ago in their Livingston store was actually pretty darned delicious.
The only national pizza chain I find any good is Pizzeria Uno’s.
I don’t eat pizza very often, but when I go for the chain stuff, Round Table is the choice. But maybe that’s just because there’s one nearby.
