Like her but I never really got into the show. It was on the same network and night as Parks And Rec so I saw it once in a while. Apparently they are revamping the show and she didn’t like the newd irection.
I wouldn’t want to be in a show with naked penises either, so I can’t blame her! ![]()
Typo of the year!
I probably should have put a smiley face after that!
I think I caught three random episodes, and two of them were about Applegate’s character’s compulsive need to one-up somebody.
I only caught the tail end of one show. How is Will Arnett’s character? I miss his hilarious, nutty intensity from Arrested Devlopment.
What a trainwreck.
This show has gone through several revamps at this point. They made a pilot, it got picked up, and then the pilot was reshot to give Maya Rudolph’s character a bigger role and to change the jobs of both hers and Applegate’s characters. Then it got picked up for a second season (despite terrible ratings), and all three main characters got different jobs, with all the supporting characters eliminated from the show. Then, after even more abysmal ratings, the network announces that they’re going to convert the show to a multi-camera comedy ala Big Bang Theory. Now, before any of the new episodes have been shot, Applegate bails.
The show was mildly amusing at the very beginning, but each revamp has made it increasingly worse. Just let it go, NBC.
I don’t recall a lot about the show but I did like Arnett and Applegates characters way more than Maya Rudolph’s.
I always liked the Season 1 interaction of Rudolph’s clueless diva, with Applegate’s more grounded mom & family lifestyle. Then they took away Maya Rudolph’s reason for being a diva (her talk show), and added a bunch of useless characters (most notably that guy from Will & Grace) and it went straight into the dumper.
Until I saw the headline I’d just assumed it was cancelled after the first season.
I like Applegate and Arnett both a whole lot, and like May Rudolph but didn’t like her character in the two or three episodes I did watch. If I’d noticed any threads or heard buzz about how great it was I might have given it another chance.
The great thing about shtick is that the first time you trot it out, nobody knows it’s shtick yet! But then you get tapped for a second series, and…
didn’t realize the show was still on.
Well, I guess that explains why Hulu hasn’t had any new episodes - looks like I’m the only person on earth who loved the show
I really liked the first season, and thought some of the second season changes were good moves (the talkshow stuff never worked for me). I bailed as soon as I heard they were going to switch to multi-cam.
I liked the first season despite some flaws, but the second season suuuuucked. How do they plan to continue without her? Just recast her? It’s going to be cancelled, I’m sure.
It’s been a mildly amusing show. Not great, not “Whitney,” just kind of there.
And through every re-tool, it’s made slightly less sense, but still, was an ok, mildly amusing show. And I could even see how it would work as multi-cam (I don’t have a multi-cam bias. To me, show’s format does not determine its quality; how a show works with its format has an influence has an influence) But I don’t see why they’re even bothering without Applegate. The show won’t make sense. They need to let it die.
I’d never even heard of it until today, when it dawned on me they weren’t talking about the old USA Network thing. I bet Lorne Michaels wants to punch her in the ovary.
TV shows don’t do this much anymore, but as long as they’re changing from a one-camera format to three-camera, why not just recast the part while they’re at it.
Let’s see, we’ll need an attractive blond comedic actress in her early 40’s who’s not already in another sitcom (sorry, Amy Poehler fans.) The original story about Applegate’s departure hinted that Lisa Kudrow might be brought in, but apparently Kudrow has already said that won’t happen.
Looking at some possible contenders. . .
Amy Ryan – looks older than Applegate, but still in range. Loved her in The Office, but that was an entirely different type of character.
Denise Richards – recurring roles in two sitcoms. Not a great actress, but nevertheless a Bond girl.
Heather Graham – another less-than-great actress, but certainly has the looks for it.
Jenna Fisher – hey, she’s available.
Mira Sorvino – okay, if they can’t get Michelle, how about Romy?
Portia deRossi – how about a reunion with Will Arnett?
Sarah Chalke – on the young end of the spectrum, but she’s had plenty of experience in replacing other actresses.
Who would you cast? This might be more entertaining than the show itself.
Sepinwall mentions that Lisa Kudrow has been discussed as a possible replacement but he hopes that they just pull the plug.
It looks like Sarah Chalke will be in the upcoming How to Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life. Not a lot of details at IMDB.
