Chronos, this is the wrong call

I think we should have an explicit rule against sexism on the whole damn Board.

Yes, I’m aware some Pitizens just did a double-take given my recent use of the word “cunt” there.

That, right there, would have been the right response to Helena’s post.

Even people who are used to it and think it normal in their own particular social groups ought by now to be able to recognize that a lot of other people are going to see it as jerkish.

I’m in a conservative area in which sport are a Very Big Deal and I know a lot of people who’d get pretty ticked off at being told that women’s sports are all “unwatchable.” It’s been a hell of a long time since the local papers only reported on the boys’ and men’s teams.

I’m a little hesitant to post this opinion because I’m not sure it’s productive to stir shit up, but I was unaware until just now that dale already had an existing topic ban on commenting on “rape allegations”, which is troubling enough, but apparently that stems from an incident in which he published the name of a rape victim whose identity was at the time not being published in newspapers due to the standard anonymity afforded rape victims in the press.

While I’m the same person who mentioned I don’t think people have stuff from years ago held against them, and this all went down in 2015, that combined with this recent incident make me frankly think this individual has a serious, disgusting and vile outlook towards women. I’m not sure if this is due to upbringing, defect of mind or character, but it calls into serious question if this is a person who should be on these boards at all.

Nearly all the people in this thread advocating for a stronger and more urgent mod response have been doing so on the basis of that well established history. This individual has a truly repellent posting record.

For what it’s worth as someone that typically doesn’t “keep score” on other posters, I was unaware his history got to this level. I had seen some cringe posts of his in the last few months that stood out to me because they almost always just popped in out of nowhere to shit on female athletes in various ways. I wasn’t aware how bad the full history was until I did a deliberate searching through some old posts.

I noticed in the thread where he published a rape victim/accuser’s name, he apologized and said he valued his posting privileges here, and would work to not repeat similar behavior in the future. I actually see dale posting in lots of threads that aren’t related to issues like this and he mostly seems fine. But I think he has some real issue with women, I don’t want to derail an ATMB thread too far to discuss it, but it seems almost unhealthy, and he doesn’t seem able to control, which is what’s salient to the forums.

Could someone link to the rape victim thread please. I was completely unaware of this and only have been noticing his recent stuff. Which has been bad.

I think Miller was wrong to warn me in this BBQ Pit thread - About This Message Board - Straight Dope Message Board

Thank you.

If it comes to choosing, I think @Helena330 is the better choice. (ETA: to keep on the board rather than @dalej42, in case that wasn’t clear.

Jesus, why wasn’t he immediately banned for that? In addition to the repellent misogyny, he may have been exposing the board to legal danger. I know how nervous this board is regarding any possible litigation against it.

Anyway I don’t see why Dale is needed on the board at all. Why not just ban him?

While I’m here, regarding the NBA/WNBA thing, the WNBA is horribly promoted. Its games aren’t advertised and it’s hard to find them on TV. When the Washington Mystics were makng their championship run, we had to work to find the games. I think this has a lot to do with the ratings disparity, more than women’s sports being inferior to men’s sports. Women’s tennis does very well. Women’s gymnastics gets more attention in the Olympics. The US team gets a decent amount of support in the Women’s world cup.

Oh. My. God.

Okay, I can see that he didn’t actually cause any harm to the victim, but Jesus Christ, what a jerk move.

Noted by several mods as one of the biggest jerk moves in the history of the boards, no less.

From that thread:

Having read as much of that thread as I could stand: seconding this.

Being angry or upset is not a reason to break the rules, nor should it be.

Disagree. The rules are one thing, and they are fine as far as they go. But the management seeming to side with misogynists is quite another.

Bricker is that you?

“The rules” have no value of their own. They are supposed to be helpful in defending higher principles and values. “Don’t be a jerk” and all that. If the rules are not helpful in doing that they should be ignored.

The board should only have one main rule: “Don’t be a jerk.” Warnings should be handed down by the mod’s decisions on who is being a jerk. They should be able to call out posters who are being assholes without having to pore over dusty old tomes like medieval monks analyzing Aristotle. A few bright line rules may be helpful as some people won’t see starting a second account or making minor edits in a quoted post as jerkish. But there’s no need for the legalistic system the dope has now. The mods are mostly good folks and I’ll trust their judgments.

The result would be that the people who get angry over lots of stuff control the conversation. Not good, IMHO.
