My guess: Because as the weapons inspectors continued to be led on more wild goose chases by U.S. intelligence and had begun to realize that what the U.S. was taking as intelligence was actually fairytales dreamed up by Chalabi and his defector friends…or more intriguingly perhaps by Iranian intelligence…the justification for the war was beginning to implode. They had to act quickly.
