Sort of a sequel to this thread, but it addresses yet another problem along these intersection exits. If you realize you are late entering the exit lane, simply pass it and turn around on the next exit. If you are just driving forward to cut in line, you deserve to spend some time in an Iraqi prison.
I was just in a fender-bender along the same 59/610 intersection. I was driving on 59 north, going downtown, in about the third lane of traffic. The two right lanes exit to 610. An SUV (not an SUV rant) speeds in front of me, then nearly stops to get into the next lane right. My options, slam on the brakes, and almost certainly get rear-ended, or swerve left and possibly get hit. Traffic was not all that bad, so I went left. I bumped a car. We both pull to the center emergency lanes and Get out to check the damage.
My thoughts are “Oh shit! Another at-fault collision.” By the time we get together to asses the damage, the SUV was still in my former lane, waiting to merge right. The first words out of the other guy’s mouth were “damn, that car stopped in front of you!” Neither of our vehicles were majorly hurt. He had an old mini-SUV. I had a 2003 Ranger with no scratches on it. He could have been a total prick, and maybe a justified one, but we both decided to not worry about exchanging information, as the damage was minimal. I just have a scraping dent on the left side of the outside bed of my truck, no lights broken. He had a slighter dent on his right front side, no lights broken. The moron who caused the wreck? As usual with assholes who make up their mind late, he gets away unscratched.
I’m not even sure it is worth fixing (likely several hundred dollars), beyond a little touch-up paint.
So a hearty “FUCK YOU,” to the driver in front of me, and a hearty “THANK YOU” to the understanding guy I hit.
